Reducing Blood Loss in Knee and Hip Surgery

Learn more at MedtronicAdvancedEnergy.comBleeding and blood loss are common during all types of surgery. However, studies have shown that orthopaedic procedures in particular – including knee and hip replacements – can cause a very large amount of bleeding.1

Excessive bleeding during surgery can lead to anemia – a reduction in the red blood cells that carry oxygen to the body. Anemia can make you feel tired, weak and sluggish. You may also need a blood transfusion to replace the blood that’s been lost. Bleeding after surgery can cause swelling and pain in the area of your joint replacement. It may also delay how quickly you heal, feel better, and get back to your normal routine.2-4

Your surgeon’s ability to control blood loss during your knee or hip replacement is crucial. Medtronic Advanced Energy develops products to help surgeons stop bleeding and reduce blood loss during surgery. As a result, these products may provide you with the following benefits:

  • Reduced need for pre-donated blood5
  • Reduced need for a blood transfusion, which may result in less risk of infection after surgery6
  • Reduced post-operative incidence of hemarthrosis, which may lead to a reduction in pain and swelling7

Aquamantys® System

The Aquamantys System from Medtronic Advanced Energy uses patented Transcollation® technology, a combination of radio frequency (RF) energy and saline that provides hemostatic sealing of soft tissue and bone during surgery. Hemostatic sealing reduces further blood loss during the procedure.
