THR Your favorite pain relief?

I have bottles of the same from years ago I never touched. Who cares. I have Norco 5mg which doesn’t work, but 10mg is better. I also have bottles of the strong stuff (OxyContin) and some Vicodin from my previous surgery four years ago I keep for an emergency
Anything that is four (or more) years old is likely expired and probably going to be useless at this stage. Please be careful about disposal, though.

The expired 5+ still works for me. Thank goodness.

I, too, suffered from the ”I‘ll give you six oxycodone” which should be adequate, line from my surgeon. Fortunately, I have a pain contract from my local pain management doctor from my back surgery 5 months ago. Every three months I go do a urine drug test. He had me on hydocodone with tylenol before surgery and added oxycodone. The hydrocodine is every 6 hours and the oxycodone is every 8 hours. Both are only 5 mg, so dosing is low actually. I just asked the pharmacy to refill the oxycodone, as I had a 7 day course. That limits my Tylenol administration to keep within the 4,000 mg per day. I can’t take motrin, as I have a history of blood clots and bilateral pulmonary embolisms secondary to long Covid. I’d trade the blood thinner for Motrin any day! That was the drug of choice for pain relief in the past. It suck’s that people with pain need to go through extra hoops to have their pain controlled. Unfortunately, chronic pain patients will be treated like a second rate citizen for the rest of my life anyhow. Remember, ice, ice and did I mention ice? :ice:

Thank you, I appreciate this. You get it. I am glad you have a doctor who listens to you and seems to trust you. I love my ice and I live on my heating pad!

The problem is that since the opioid crisis w/ so many people becoming addicted, the pendulum has swung so far to the other side. Too much liability at stake for physicians to prescribe, so unless they are specifically a pain management doc, they simply do not.

TKR L knee Oct 31, 71- yrs old:
Tylenol 3,000/day - no help; Aleve 2 for daytime and one in pm- no help; Voltaren cream- no help; Salonpas pads (nighttime) very stinky menthol, but gives some temporary relief; Ice always feels good.
My orthopedist won't prescribe opioids- he's just very against stronger pain meds. Even in low dosages.

Can you discuss pain options with your primary care provider?

Can you obtain a referral to a pain management specialist? Now I understand it’s another hoop to jump through. You may find your recovery maybe a bit more pleasant.

@LimpyCAgirl

I was completely hung out to dry over an entire weekend by my PA (who wrote my prescriptions) my first weekend at home and will not forgive that easily; did not return desperate calls or acknowledge by calling it in and letting my pharmacy call me. I was already past renewal date Friday so that was not the issue. I fortunately had a bunch of old Tramadol deep in the back of my closet from my ACDF in 2017 (proving my junkie status...6 years in my closet) and used it to get through. After they so generously called Monday late in the day and I got a fresh bottle, I realized they had weakened but still worked with no ill effects. I totally understand the crisis in this country but being made to feel like an addict was just insult piled upon injury.

Hi from the UK,
This sounds so familiar, out of date meds for emergencies, feeling like a junkie waiting for the next dose, panicking if stocks are low.
I had a younger colleague call me and addict because I said I had to eat a small snack to take my meds on the dot.Otherwise I get stomache ache
I laughed it off and hope she is never in my situation.
I noticed that LimpyCAgirl wasn't impressed with Celebrex, which I take. I'm not impressed either but notice if I miss a couple of doses so guess it must be doing something.
Haven't tried any other alternatives other than paracetamol ( acetaminophen), Celebrex, codeine and tramadol. Not all together I hasten to add!
