Hi Everyone,
I am back again after several years, unfortunately. You guys have gotten me through a right knee replacement and two hip replacements and a right reverse shoulder replacement which I had on April 18th, 2019. The shoulder replacement recovery has been a nightmare. The pain has never ceased. I went for months of physical therapy, had several cortisone shots, CT scans, etc. Last month I found a new surgeon who sent me for metal allergy testing and blood work. I saw him on Friday. He said that it appears I have an infection and the implant needs to come out. On June 8 I am scheduled to have the implant removed and an antibiotic spacer will be placed for 3 months. After that I will have a new implant placed. He did say that some people choose to leave the spacer and not do second surgery, but most choose the second surgery. Does anyone know anything about this procedure? I am very discouraged, but I guess this is something I have to do. I don’t feel particularly ill, but I don’t feel great either. Because of the pandemic no one is allowed in the hospital with me. I will be dropped off and the hospital will call my husband to come pick me up outside in two days. The thought of going through this by myself is upsetting me, but I know I am not the only person who has to deal with this situation.

@Yamhillnancy Welcome back to BoneSmart! So sorry it's for due to dealing with an infection!

Can you get an earlier surgery date? I am concerned they are letting you wait so long since they have already established there is an infection. Do you have a infectious diseases specialist supporting you?

I think you are our first shoulder infection member. We have plenty of members with hip infections. They go through the same routine - removal of the implant and spacer placed. Most also take antibiotics orally or via IV.

Sorry you have to do this alone. Staff will be very understanding. It's a tough situation but safest for everyone. Will you need to isolate pre-op as well?

We will be with you all the way!

Thanks, Jacey. I am going to call the surgery scheduler tomorrow to see if the surgery can be done sooner. The surgeon did say that if I started to run a fever or if the shoulder got hot or red to call. I have to get a COVID test 5 days before surgery. I have been fully vaccinated but still need to do the test. The surgeon (don’t know if I can say his name?) said I most likely will be on IV antibiotics when I get home. We have rented a house in Carmel from July 30-August 5 with our whole family. We haven’t seen our son and his wife for 2 years because of pandemic. We had cancel last Summer. Our daughter, son-in-law and their 3 little girls are coming too. I hope I will be well enough to go. I am worried about it.

don’t know if I can say his name?
Of course you can talk about your surgeon. We have a whole database of member recommendations for surgeons.

Do try and get your surgery date pulled in. The earlier the better and since you have that vacation booked that's even more reason. I think you will probably be able to make the trip. But you won't be doing any lifting or heavy work. At least there will be lots of family to help you if needed!

@Yamhillnancy - I'm so sorry to hear about the infection. I know it can be scary to do this by yourself. This pandemic has affected so much of our lives. The hospital staff has been at this for awhile, so hopefully they are used to helping calm people's nerves. When I had my second THR, I drove myself and my son's picked me and my car up when I was discharged a few hours later. The administrator at the surgery center came and spent some time talking to me because I was alone.

And, while no one will be there with you in person, with phone and Skype or FaceTime, you can have someone with you when you want and can more easily kick them out when you don't!

As Jaycey said, the sooner the better!
