I am schedule for my knee replacement August 31....but now I am wondering if they would do it....I have been Dr. the last 2 months for a bad rash on my polio leg. I've been putting the ointment on it 2 times a day like the Dr. said.

Went back last week and she said I finally give up you need to see a Dermatogist....but I can't get in to them until Sept. 22.

So I was wondering if I can't get this clear up before my surgery would they still be able to do the surgery....the knee replacement is on my good leg (left leg) my polio leg is the right one. I'm leaving my brace off most of the day seeing if the air might help to relieve the rash....it's done both sides of the leg and on the back....moving up to my hip. Since I finally decided to have the surgery done...I hope I can go through with it now.

Hi, Well Im not sure maybe if its not an infection they would. That would probably be a question for Jo or Jamie. Did he say what the rash was from.? Have you had this before? I sure hope they dont postpone surgery but I really dont know Im sorry. Think positive though. Dont get worked up yet till you here from your OS yet. I would call the OS and let him know he might have some suggestions. Good Luck to you.

Welcome, Jane! If you can't get an appointment, just go to an Urgent Care center or even the emergency! You may need prescription steroidal ointment! Considering your surgery is coming up shortly, can't the dermatologist squeeze you in earlier? Your is indeed an emergency situation! Hope everything works out for you! Call first thing tomorrow! Maybe you can get in on a cancelation! Your GP might be able to intervene on your behalf and/or prescribe something to relieve you! Good luck!

Get the dr to ring the specialist and put the hard word on.....these dr can always squeeze in an emergency, but the secretary can only authorise appointments according to her diary...but if the dr talks to the dermatologist they can usually work something out.....

I suffer from psoriasis and I was having a pretty severe outbreak at the time of my surgery, probably stress. I'm not sure anyone knew or cared.

I think it was more about being on antibiotics before the surgery that's the concern! :0

Won't make a scrap of difference, Jane. If the rash is weepy or dropping skin scales, they might put a covering on it for the duration of the surgery but otherwise, they'll not worry. It has no significance whatsoever.

It will not make a difference as Jo said. But if you have access to a chlorine pool you may try getting in it a few days. That helps with skin problems. I have really bad allergies to everything.

Hi you guys!!
I did talk to the Dr. yesterday and he said as long as it is on the polio leg and not the one that he will be replacing the knee on it will be OK. And my husband told me on Wed. why not try using Watkins First Aid Salve also with the salve that the DR. gave me. And I can't believe how much better the leg looks (also I've been keeping the brace off most of the day till hubby comes home then I put it back on) and I think with just staying in the power chair all day and leaving the air get to it ...... it is looking so much better......Thanks for all of your advice.
I'll keep in touch..
Jane

Yes ,see it all worked out. Im so happy for you.....Moving right on the the replacement....Good Luck to you !!!!!!!! :)

Jane--
I'm so glad that your leg is doing better! Waiting for surgery is so tough and to think that it might have to be postponed would drive me CRAZY. I'm happy that you are improving.
Blessings,
Irene

Dear jane,

I am also highly allergic (red hair) and here are some things that help me. one, if you use a brace, think of putting a think sock or the cotton underwrap they use for under casts under your brace.

You might have a contact dermatitise from the brace. Sometimes I take alcohol and just lightly wipe off all the surfaces to clean them up.

Also, when I hike in the summer, I get urticaria (hives) from the heat and sometimes from DEET. I took DEET out of my life, but the heat will do it sometimes. You can google urticaria and find dermatology websites with pictures. It is itchy. I use steroid cream for it and also, use cooling water-=-\like a pool would be great.

It is frustrating to bet these rashes, but heat could be a factor and anykind of rubbing from that brace too. Good luck.

there is another forum---On OUr Feet Joint forum and there was a woman with polio who had her other knee replaced--I can't remember her name, but she posted many times. Kelly
