Morning everyone!!!

Advice please! I got so frustrated last night with the lack of sleep that I said to heck with it and fipped over to my tummy and slept LIKE A ROCK for 4 hrs.:shk: Woke up and had a duck! Could not remember when I was to be allowed to break the sleep on your back rule. I laid awake for a couple of hours and said to heck with this, flipped to my tummy and went back to sleep. Geez, it felt good to get some sleep for once. But I cant remember what the OS said about what could go wrong with sleeping this way and when I had the OK to do it?

I slept so hard that I could have moved wrong and not known it!! What do you think? Is it way to soon for this? I have tried to sleep on non-surgical side with pillows between my legs but it is not comfortable.

Thanks,
Erika

Erika......Glad you got to sleep! My OS was pretty strict about the 90 degree rule! They're so afraid of dislocation!! I would just keep piling those pillows up.....ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry!!! You just went through waaaaay too much to have to worry!! It won't be forever!!:sigh:

Jo would have to say for sure what the danger might be. I'm glad nothing happened, but to be safe I would try and wait a while longer before sleeping on your stomach. Or you could give your doctor's office a call and talk with them about it. After all this, you sure don't want to risk dislocation.

Glad you had a good nite of sleep. I would call the doc's office and see what they say. I used drugs to sleep and it worked for me. REst is very important, but dislocation would be horrible

The danger of sleeping on your front would be .............. nothing! The problem comes when you're turning over and back again. Most people would bend their leg to give them some leverage to turn over either way but so long as you don't do it with your operative leg, what's the diff? Anyway, you're 4 weeks down now and only 2 weeks to go on your restrictions so I doubt there's much to worry about. Sleep well!

I'm not sure but I would say you are probably ok.

I just got back from my hip replacement info class and the RN who was teaching it said you can sleep on your back or unoperated side (just not the side you had the operation on). No one asked about tummy sleeping but I would think it would be ok :p

Thanks, Jo. I learned something with your post!!!

Hi Erika,
After coming home from my second surgery, I ended up on my tummy because my knee was having twitchy tantrums and I could not get any relief from the weird feeling. So, I got myself over on my tummy and it felt SO-O-O-O good. And, after doing so, my knee no longer twitched.
As wise Jo mentioned, the main thing is the getting turned over without doing any damage. But the hip will definitely let you know when you are overdoing, and I doubt, personally, that you would sleep through that pain unless you were on sleep meds.
So enjoy; lightning hasn't struck me yet and my hips are working just fine. In fact, have just returned home from a 400-mile (one way) trip to see my son before he is deployed to Iraq, and I did all the driving with no problems.

I so identify with Erika re frustration of sleeping on my back.
I have another question ...
The back of my left heel is almost chaffed or overstimulated from always being in contact with the bed. Sometimes I wake up at night with excruciating nerve pain in the heel. Has anyone else had this?

Also, the other morning when I woke I go my wife to help me on to my side and I slept for another hour while she was around checking that I didn't try to flip. It was heaven!!!

Hi take it easy Im a knee but I have heard so much about the hip rules...It will come in time...............(

Thanks everyone for the replies!!

Gavin....YES, I had that heel pain also. Hurts like heck. I put a pillow under my leg to help relieve the pressure and change position. It helped for a little while.

Glenys...Congrats on your trip!! So glad you got to see your son! How proud AND scared you must be. We have been having the military talk with our 8 and 10 yr olds and discussing the pros and cons of joining. (Because my 8 yr son said that was what he was going to do when he was old enough.) I can not imagine how you parents handle it (or spouses either for that matter) but thank GOD for the heroes that watch over us!!!

Jo...thanks for that. You are one SMART chick!!! After my revitalizing surgery in March...I could not bear any weight on either side while flipping so I learned how to go from front to back using just my arms. I am now such a pro...I look like a fish flapping back and forth...(grin)
Happy Wednesday everyone!!
Erika

Tonerika,
Thanks so much for your support. It is not easy saying your goodbyes to your baby, especially when he hands you his last will and testament. But we had a good time and were able to push the reason I was there out of our minds.
Instead of looking like a fish flopping as you flip over, how about the beautiful mermaid?:D:D
