My OS has told me there might be a problem getting on and off my motorcycle, has anyone out there had any problems?

Not being able to drive my Harley was exactly what convincedme TO have my hip replacement done!

I had an anterior approach, with a metal on metal joint, and only 8 weeks out, I started riding and loving it again! Mine was my right hip, and I always get on the bike from the kickstand side, so that entails lifting the operated leg all the way up and over the seat. No problem!

Use the bike as good motivation, and look forward to getting a beautiful part of your life back! Good luck.

Sorry I cant help Ronnie. I dont have a Harley...lol Im sure in time. Just be careful. Happy riding...

Bill That bike is beautiful.....and your a very handsome man...lol... Doesnt even look like you had any type of surgery at all. Good to see you back to the way things were...That looks like an older car in the back. What kinda car is that. Dont want to say something wrong...lol.

Many go back to riding horses which is surely a bigger challenge to mount than a Harley, isn't it? Read this post 17 Years 5 (FIVE) Total Joint Replacements! noting this passage ...

Yet to this day at the age of 64, he still works every day driving one of the Semi's. In the evenings and on some weekends, he rides competition cutting horses.

Hi Kim!
Thanks for the compliment! (Where's the blushing emoticon?)

Good eyes on the car, it's a 1965 Ford Mustang GT Convertible! My dad taught me how to drive in a mustang back when I was a teenager, so when he passed, I used some of my (modest) inheritance to buy a mustang in his honor. Blue was his favorite color, and to this day I can feel him riding beside me, wind in his hair, sun on his skin...

You're sooooo cool, Mud! Also love your Mustang in the garage!! Ride on!!!! :)

Ronnie-- I gave up my bike, a BMW K1100RS, about 4-5 years ago because I couldn't ride it for more than about 10 minutes. I'm now 3 months out, with 2 new hips, and I'm getting the bug again. My wife has vetoed a new bike, but I will say that I absolutely am capable of riding again pain free. So if you can work out the ancillary details and can accept the risk that all riders are aware of ( and maybe some additional concerns with a THR), I see no reason not to. I'm jealous!

Oh wow Jamie will have a fit. I think she has one like it or loves these cars.......From what I can see...........They dont do those colors anymore.........NICE!!!!!

Don't want to de-rail Ronnie's thread, but since you like the Mustang so much, here's a pic!

Ronnie sent me a message with a link to the Harley Owner's Group (HOG) chapter in Northern Ireland! How cool is that?????!!!!!!

OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE IT!!!!! That color again you dont see that anymore....I would love to own a car like that...In my dreams I guess.....Now thats a car!!!!!!!!!!!Looks immaculate, did you do anywork on it...
When Ronnie gets better, you guys meet up and ride together we sure want that pic.

Bill, that is just one beautiful car! I am so jealous - the new shaped Mustangs are just not a patch on something like that.

Sorry for the derail post Ronnie - I think we need our own vehicle appreciation thread somewhere......:D

Workbill....mine is a '66 convertible, burgundy. I've owned it since it was new. My dad bought it for me when I was in college. Good times in that car!!!

Ronnie, I think you'll find you can do a LOT of things you didn't expect...including riding your Harley again. Hang in there!!!

Send some more pix so we can live vicariously through you!!! :)

Ronnie, I thinking mounting and dismounting are always dangerous. I asked my OS before tkr June 23,09 when I could ride my horse again, and at that time he said I COULD ride, but might not be able to tolerate it. At 2 1/2 weeks, I got the okay from him and, promising to use spotters for mounting and dismounting, I rode for 40 minutes. Heaven! One difference is that I didn't have to hold the horse upright to get going. Good luck! Peggy

Hi Ronnie. I'm 13 days post-op, LTHR. I, too, had to stop riding my street bike, a Suzuki V-Strom, quite a while (almost 2 years) before my surgery because I couldn't sit on it for more than 20 minutes without being in significant pain. I also ride dirt bikes with my 17-yr-old son. I have a KTM 520EXC. We do mostly woods riding on established trails. I'm too old to motocross and do all those big jumps these days... :D It's funny, even up until a few months before my surgery, I was able to ride my dirt bike fairly comfortably even on days when I could barely walk. Once on the bike, the constant body movement (standing, sitting, crouching, leaning, etc.) actually helped to relax my arthritic joint and reduce the pain level. Getting on and off that tall monster with a bum hip sure was a chore, though! :D

I met a fellow (about my same age) at a bike rally a few years ago who had recently had BOTH hips replaced. He was riding a fairly sporty bike (Yamaha FZ1) with limited leg room, and said that he was able to ride all day long without any discomfort at all.

My V-Strom has been sitting in the corner of the garage collecting dust for the past couple of years, but I'm looking forward to getting back on it again in a few more weeks, once I get this new hip whipped into shape. I'm a little bit concerned about getting back on the dirt bike though. Even though I'm a very conservative rider and rarely ever fall, the risk of that possibility concerns me.
