Why Rehab ?

For me, PT showed me the possibilities. I was so scared of hurting my new knee and would not have done these exercises without someone there assuring me that they were the best thing for me.

I agree, Pat. I think this is one of the benefits of therapy.

I was given a choice--PT at home or at the local hospital. I chose the hospital. Why? Because then I could get out of the house. And I know me--if I did it at home I would still be laying in bed reading a good book when they showed up. And of course I would fib and tell them I had been doing my exercises when I hadn't!

It's about accountability but also marking progress. Sitting here doing my exercises every day, I couldn't tell how much real progress I was making. It helps to have someone to mark your progress and give you the next steps.

In terms of why we go to rehab/PT I'm sure it has a lot to do with our culture...we American's and our Type A/overachiever vs. slacker/couch potato mentalities. We tend to see things as all or nothing (active or lazy, motivated or not), and our doctors also tend to be unnaturally attached to the outcome and progress of "their" knees...Egos, you know. Not saying I like it or agree with it, just saying how it is (somewhat exhausting to tell you the truth...)

I agree with Jill about the doctor's. But don't forget that America is a very litigious society. If our knee's don't turn out good, it's the doctor's fault. So the doctors make sure we get PT.

Jill, Terri, what you and others say makes sense. Thank you. :D
