I'll christen this forum with a first post. I'm scheduled for MIS surgery in 2 months. Going to do both hips using MIS technique. Surgeon tells me it will be a 4 inch anterior incision and I could be back at work in about 2 weeks. He also says that I should not have any hip precautions after surgery. Wife is a PT and she has had one of his patients and was very impressed with the results.

I'd love to hear from others who have had a mini hip done and what your recovery was like.

I had an anterior incision for my LTHR July 9th. My incision is 5.5" long, however. I didn't realize until I went to my 1st follow-up appt. yesterday that I had no restrictions, either. I had thought I had them until my 1st follow-up. C'est la vie. I'm pleased with my recovery. I still use a cane, & get PT 3x/wk, but all I'm using for pain is ibuprofen, now that I'm off aspirin therapy.

I WISH I had known abot this before I had my knee done! Its seems to address all the issues that are causing me problems now!

This one's for hips, Gloucesterman! There is a similar forum in the knee section.

Oh dear - tell me more! What went wrong? Is she going to have a revision?

Hello,
I had MIS on my left hip THR on 4/23/8. Considering that my left hip was damaged at age 9 (now 57), the fact that my doctor added about an inch to the length of my leg, I am progressing well. I am about 4 months post & have only the don't cross your left over your right restriction since week 5 & never a weight restriction. I am very pleased with the progress. I have some slight low back pain still, but the chiropractor says it should pass with the right type of exercise.
You should have a shorter recovery time & less pain since fewer muscles are moved / cut during surgery. I have about a 4 inch scar that is healing nicely.

It is good to hear that some people are getting the benefit of the op. My mum is not that lucky, had a few complication and now the surgeon doesnt even know why she still cant walk?!?

Go see another surgeon! Any surgeon who is as disinterested as this one seems (on the surface of it) should be bypassed pretty quickly.

WOOOHOOO,
I passed my venous scan yesterday. So now I am scheduled for Bilateral hips on the 16th. Direct Anterior approach supposedly a ~4in incision. Cross linked poly cup liner with ceramic head.
I am absolutely terrified about the fact there is no turning back once they cut my femoral heads off. ;( But I am SO ready and psyched to put this all behind me and start claiming my life back one day at a time!!!

Best wishes,
Donna

Congratulations!!!!!
I am so happy for you. I had the same feelings about cutting the femoral head off. A few days before surrgery it did not bother me anymore and I have never thought about it since. Except to realize I did not like that idea. You should start your own thread!!!
How are those dogs doing??

Judy

The dogs are doing well. Though they are a little attention starved. They are all so rowdy, I will miss them for the first week or so. I don't think I will need a 165 lbs of hairy joy running up and burying his head in Mom's abdomen.;) They forget how big they are.

Who can't wait to be walking the dogs again!

I had bilateral MIS hip surgery in February. Did not know it was MIS until after...Incisions were 9-10 cm each side and were done lateral posterior approach. I had all the usual precautions post op...but did see a relatively fast rehab..approx 2 weeks light PT. Driving and back to work in 4.

I am 7 months post op now and feel great....no pain and most pre OA mobility is back.

Sounds like you are psyched. Your description matches the procedure my surgeon is going to do with me on the 1st of October. I'm starting to get a little nervous, but I guess thats normal. My hips have actually been behaving themselves lately, I guess they know whats coming. I'm going to have the labs done in about a week and have my preliminary physical on the 25th. Good Luck.

Here's a joke to cheer you up:

Man takes his dog to the vets but the vet can't find anything wrong. The man isn't satisfied and asks for some tests. The vet says okay and opens the door to his private office and whistles. A Labrador comes in and circles the dog, sniffing and listening. Then he looks at the vet, shakes his head and leaves. Then a cat comes in, jumps up on the table and proceeds to work her way around the dog, sniffing and listening. The she too shakes her head, jumps down and goes.

"Nope, sorry." says the vet, "definitely nothing wrong."

Reluctantly, the owner accepts this and the bill is presented for $1,550. The owner is staggered.

"What's all this?" he exclaims. "I thought an appointment was only $50?"

"Oh, it is," the vet explains. "but £1,000 is for the lab work and $500 for the cat scan."!!

(was an American joke!)

Hi Bob,
Yes, I am so ready to be on the other side of the curve. ;) I hate being so inactive. I hate watching my dogs being shown badly by Wonderful sweet volunteers.
I too am a little nervous mainly about the fact that once they cut the bone out of you there is no going back if something happens.
But I do have supreme confidence in my OS and have read most of the related articles he has published. He has studied reasons for doing things the way his does - rather than just medical "tradition". Since that is how I approach things it gives me confidence.
Basically my "modus operandi" is plan for the worst and be pleased for anything above that. So I am assuming the first two weeks will SUCK, but after that it, will be forward motion. ;) Normally I take the minimum pain killer I can get away with, but for those two weeks I plan on taking anything they offer. I have warned every one that I have no plans on functioning in any capacity except recovery.;)
Go for my Echo today and donate my blood. Stress test tomorrow. Then the count down begins.

Best wishes,
Donna

Good luck for tomorrow. I've been bumped up a day to the 30th of this month. By the time I go under, you should be at 2 weeks. Then you can tell me what to expect. I go for labs at the end of this week and pre physical next week. Again, best wishes.

Have to be there at 5;30am , just not nice! It will probably be in their best interest to put me under quickly. NOT a morning person particularly without coffee.

Let ya know how it is on the other side.

Donna

Well,
I can say I have had MIS THR surgery and have matching zippers to prove it.. Hi all I'm home!! In on Tues at 5:30am. (BOO hiss I am not a morning person) fortunately my OS is. So surgery at 7:30. Spent a little extra time in recovery because of low blood pressure. Actually the sleeping I was able to do in recovery was the best I have had in a year. No pain at all.
I was rolled into my room around 2:00 feeling really quite terrific all things considered. PT showed up at some point in the afternoon and I took a stroll out into the hall and back with a walker. Had a few incidents of barfing later that evening - no nausea though just all of a sudden I need to barf now. Nurses said it is quite common.
I am truly amazed at how well this has gone. Wed I went down to PT and insisted on using my crutches, and then did all of their exercises and some stairs. Back to the room for some rest. Back to PT in the afternoon to jump through some more hoops. Every one saying how amazed they were, so I asked if I could go home. PT said she saw no reason from her stand point. So this morning back to PT and at noon I came home!! Every one said I was the buzz of the hospital.
Now I do feel like the operating team was taking turns jumping on my thighs with cleats on. But honestly I really don't hurt any more then I did on a bad day before surgery. And the good news is it is mostly muscle soreness. They hip joints themselves are soOOOO much more stable than my original equipment. YAY!!
So I am looking forward to everyday a little better and approaching my old life sooner rather than later.
MY advice do your research - every one one this guys team was terrific from beginning to end. Find some way to keep your muscles strong even if it is sitting in a chair and working out with soup cans. I am relying heavily on my upper body to pick up the slack. I was swimming and doing exercises in the pool 3 times a week. It really helped.
Of course I realize I am going to discover new hurts daily for a while BUT I AM THRILLED!!!!! to be on the road to recovery. Can ya tell?
More tomorrow it's getting late and I'm whipped.

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes,
Donna
