Hello...my name is Kathy, from Ohio. I am 7 days out from TKR...had my surgery June 18th....my husbands birthday! My knee felt better yesterday than today....I'm figuring because yesterday I had my initial evaluation and therapy session. My leg feels so sore & achy all over...especially where they had the tourniquet. My shins are sore, and it almost feels like a charlie horse in my calf....more discomfort than pain. I have found that moving is better than sitting and this is the first day that ice doesn't feel that good either. I'm assuming this is all "normal"? Still taking pain pills every 6 hours. Afraid not to! Looking forward to hear from others that are 1 week post-op.

Hi kathy welcome in. I'm a March 18th. but we do have lots of june babies as I'm sure you have read. Yeah, those pain pills will be your friend for a while and that is OK. To heal you gotta move and if you hurt, you wont. Keep posting.

Hey Iam Jim from Ohio Had mine surgery June 16, and yes still taking pain meds but getting better.Sweeling still there but getting better also, havent had this kind of surg. before so dont know alot about it, but I have had 8 other knee surg. of varying degrees. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Kathy, Welcome! There are several of us June kneezies. I had rtkr on Oct 1, 07 and ltkr on June 9, 08. I have to admit, my second knee has been about 200 times easier then the first. I actually took a short trip out to the mall this afternoon and walked through two stores! I'm home icing now and definitely needed a pill after that excursion. I'll try to get out and do some walking every day now that I'm past the two week mark. Two weeks seems to be a magical turnaround time when you start feeling sub-human again; at least for me anyway.....

You will find that one day you are felling great and then the next, you'll feel like you've been hit by a bull dozer. Nothing is steady about this recovery. Two steps forward and then one back. Hang in there..... You'll be feeling great in another month or two and will be asking yourself why you waited so long. Karen

This surgery new for me too...I have a good doctor. Where are you from in Ohio? I had my surgery at Alliance Hospital.

Seems that each day of recovery is different... some good - some not so good! I have lots of bruising ...had a bakers cyst removed from behind my knee. Doc said my knee was bad...bone on bone as well as it wearing a divot into the bone.

I'm excited that my leg is straight and not bowed like before the surgery.
Yesterday after therapy I felt great and very motivated, now today I feel very sore. I'm just listening to my body...moving and resting and hoping tomorrow will be a better day.

Hello, Mumzoil. And welcome to the forum. It's great to have you here so please excuse when I say what I am going to say.

[Bonesmart.org] who else had surgery June 18th?
How come you folks always seem to think this is some kind of minor operation that you'd not be needing pain pills are 7 days? I feel so desperate for you all! This is major surgery - major MAJOR surgery - and 7 months isn't going to see everything go away never mind 7 days!

Okay - professional rant over!

In everything else you seem to be doing just great. Keep posting!

Hi Mumzoil,

I too had TKR on June 9. I am excited to be past the 2 week mark. PT has been coming along fairly well. Today I measured 115 degrees ROM, and -5 extension.

I finally came to grips with the fact that this is not a minor surgery but rather pretty MAJOR! When I realized that, and began taking pain meds like I am supposed to, I began to see better results from PT. Pain meds are my friend! Actually, a pretty good friend right now!!!

If there is one bit of advice that I could give at this early stage, it would be to not give up on the pain meds, and that will allow you to get the most from your new knee!

Good luck,
Hess

Kathy,
I had BTKR June 16 so am just a couple of days ahead of you. As painful as it may seem, the symptoms are pretty normal. I had my worse days on day 8 and 9. One leg is much worse than the other, but it was the one that started out really bad. I have bruising all over my legs, but that is because they put those tight tournneqettes (sp?) on them to help with the bleeding during surgery. Today, I am feeling a bit better. Your knee has been a major construction zone with cutting, sawing, hammering, cementing, etc. I have LOTS of work to do on my ROM, as it is only about 75% on my left knee. The other one is progressing much faster. So, not only is each person different, but each knee also heals at a different rate. (Lucy, my left knee is just plain stubborn, but Ethel, my right knee, is going to set a good example.) Okay, am I the ONLY one who has named her new knees?

You're right Sharon, I think I'll name my new knee Jaime, after Jaime Sommers, you know, the bionic woman!! What do you think?

This is a bit like naming cars - how about Metal Mickey?
