Can anyone provide any pros and cons regardting the two basic types of hip replacement surgery. (The two incision minimally invasive method versus the standard old fashion method). Which is the better way to have it done?

I've asked the question regarding the 2 incision surgery approach. Still no responses??

I saw one post about a problem with the 2 incision, but I've read articles/research that also shows you can have the same problems with the standard approach. The article below has some good comparison information.

I know that MIS isn't that popular, but from what I've read it can be highly successful. Hopefully we will get more input from this forum.

Hi

Every Consultant has his/her own ideas. Mine likes to (in his words) get in there have a proper look around, but I've heard so many people say that MIS is the way forward. Trust your surgeon he'll know what's best for you.

I'm so sorry I missed your post, Dennis. Very remiss of me!

I would always recommend the MIS. No two ways about it! But - it depends upon your meeting the requirements recommended - not obese, no other contraindications - you can find them all on the information section of this forum.

If you meet those then you are in for shorter stay in hospital and shorter rehab and less pain. But, as Karen said, make sure you find someone who is very experienced and has a good track record, vis a vis low infection rate, high percentage of acceptable outcomes such as dislocations, breakages, unexplained pain and loosenings.

My surgeon is new at MIS, however in 3 mos he performed 150. He performs 3 MIS a week, this doesn't include the regular THR.

By the time he does mine he will have more than 250 performed. He has a great reputation, with both the Physical Therapy staff and patients.

He said he uses computer navigation to assist with placement, combined with his 20 plus years of doing THR he said he hasn't had any placement problems using MIS.

I'm scheduled to get my computerized image of my hip on February the 28th. I'm interested in seeing how it looks vs. the x- ray

Going back in for my second hip after having the first one done this past September. The doc wouldn't do the mis because of my size. I think it is dependent upon the device they need to get into your leg.

Anyway I'm going back for more since after the first two or three days I was whining but not totally miserable.

Actually, most hips can be done via MIS, the only difference is the instruments being used. And yes, MIS cannot be done on people who are overweight as access is made very problematic by the extra depth of fat and muscle. It's the same for MIS TKRs.
