Does the hospitals send someone out before surgery or during or after with home equiptment adjustments, or am I responsible for that on my own, before surgery? Like bed risers, toilet risers, etc....

I don't know about your insurance, but I was given a kit in the hospital with a reacher, a "thing" to put on my socks, and a long handled sponge, but I was responsible for getting my walker, cane, potty lift, etc.

Hi Phoggie,

I went to a local medical supply store and bought the "hip kit". it comes with a reacher tool, long handled sponge, long shoe horn, and sock thingy. It was about $30.00. Well worth every penny!
I got the crutches from the hospital when I left, I think they'll provide a walker too. i would just ask.

As far as the potty chair. My recommend, if you can, have someone install a higher rise toilet. My friends came over and remplaced mine and I love it!! I also installed handicap rails which are very helpful. you can get the rails at a medical supply store too.

If you don't have a walk in shower you may want to get a tub/shower seat. I used mine for about 4-6 weeks. Also, at a medical supply store.

good luck.

Just having experienced this, I would recommend you get this all nailed down prior to surgery. I was in the hospital being passed back & forth between the insurance co. the hospital & doctor trying to find out who does what.

My hospital supplied all the basics. The folks at PT had lists & where to's for things like shower stools. I had a choice of a walker or cane from the hospital. I chose the walker, because I had a cane.
They gave me the leg lifter, the grabber thing and offered the sock helper, but I was able to put on my socks the first week and didn't need it.

I am scheduled in June and was wondering the same thing. When my mother had her Bilateral, they supplied her with everything and her insurance and medicare paid. I'm not taking chances. I've been surfing the web, and found Overstock.com to be a good source and cheaper than the medical supply places. I bought TWO high-rise toilet seats (one for upstairs and one for the main level), a shower seat, and a detachable shower head which I didn't have. Most folks have said that the hospital gives out the other tools (grabber, etc.). I am going to ask about the walker when I go in for my evaluation at the hospital.
