I had my 3rd PT appt. at home today. As usual, after several exercises and stretches he measured - I sit on a chair, push my right foot as far back as possible and push my knee out. On Monday it measured 95. Wed. it was 102. Today was 109.
OK, it looks like it's getting better, but where am I going? What is the "magic" number I'm aiming for??
(and who knew you could break into an all over body sweat from just bending your knee?????:shk:)

You are trying to get where you can use that leg to get up and down with. So when you can get leg farther behind in a chair you can get up easier. I am at 119 on both legs now and still have trouble get up from sitting in chairs without arms.

My doc said 130 was the magic number, which he said was as good as lots of people have before knee problems. My PT said one very skinny lady got hers into the 140s. Mine was 117 at around 3 weeks, but that's with a partial and it was 130 (134 with help) at 8 weeks.

It sounds like you're making very good progress.

Thats about what my Dr said Pat...but you sound like you are doing amazing Beach keep up the good work...thats really amazing................)

Whatever You achieve without killing yourself I guess would be YOUR magic number! Keep up the great recup!!! ((:0)

It's not myself you should worry about! I have noticed that my PT stands jjuusssttt out of arms' reach! Smart man!

I seriously was afraid I might punch my physical therapist the first few times she pushed on my knee. She is a cute little smiley thing, and I told my husband I was sure I could take her even with my bum knee.

Now, it doesn't hurt so bad, and she doesn't seem so intent on killing me. (She never was, I am being dramatic).

But your numbers sound awesome. I am so proud of your progress. My surgeon said he expected me to get "full range of motion" back in my knee with my partial, and I don't really know what that means either.

Good question, and as always, good answers.

My PT is smart... he doesn't actually do the pushing, he just stands to the side and goads me into it! So, it's me doing the painful stuff, but (as any self respecting second grader would say) "He MADE me do it!!!"

Wow! I'd kill for those numbers! (well almost!) Sonds like you're doing great! Hope it continues like that for you!

Ya'll, and on other thread/s tonight have some good ROM numbers!

PT's often will not look at your face when they are doing the hard push thing.

A very wise lady told me just the other day: Numbers are for banks...not knees! As long as you can do your normal things...don't worry! Just work on your ROM and don't focus on the numbers! That will only discourage you! I went through that last week....won't go through that again! Best of luck and keep up the great work!

That's a VERY wise lady!! Aint THAT the truth!!! :shk::shk:

Beach ,you be cool or you will dislocate a elbow swinging at that (smart man). -
I think most men are pretty smart, but maybe thats just my thinking??

Beach you are doing awesome and you know it,,,,now don't be hurting yourself,,or anyone else.:hehe:

There really is no "magic" number. It's all about what you want to do and can you do it. And there is more to it than just ROM. The bend is only part of the equation. You must get muscle strength in your quad and hamstring and good balance with core muscle strength.

Calling....if you are having trouble getting up from a chair and have to use your arms, that's not a ROM issue. It means you need to work on your quad muscles. Squats are a great exercise for that. So is using a stationary bicycle. Ask at Curves....maybe they can give you some specific exercises. Or Google them. Or talk to your therapist if you are still seeing one. Strong quads will help you get up and down from the floor too.

Thanks Jo! I'm learning...I'm retaining! Retaining is very important...LOL

My PT always measures ROM with me lying on the table and pulling my heel toward me. I wonder if it makes much difference in numbers if you are laying down, or sitting in a chair??

She had me pull my "good" leg up as far as I could and it was a 125, so she said that will be my target number. Right now with my new knee, I'm at a 110 on a good day!!

I can't go any further than 125 on my left leg because my legs are "kind of" chubby!!

Kind of = real

I guess it might depend on the individual, but I got better numbers when sitting than when lying down. You might ask to be measured that way at least once to see. Sit forward on the chair and bend your leg back underneath the seat. But remember, it's just a number, so that's why it really doesn't matter how you measure....it's your progress and ability to do things you want to do that counts.
