TKR When oh when oh when

@FionaW - I have not been reluctant to take pain meds. I took tramadol for months during my recovery, sometimes 4 times a day! It seems that now I can only take a small amount and still have issues. I just took a meloxicam, with some crackers and a few peanuts. Lunch was earlier. I will see how it goes and will give an update. Thanks!

Ahh, sorry, I’ve misunderstood.
You’ve just reminded me that when I took tramadol after my hip replacement, I could not tolerate the prescribed dose of two tablets, four times a day… but after some desperate trial and error, I found that I could tolerate them one at a time. This continued for about a month, and then even one at a time became impossible to tolerate. Does that sound like what’s happening with you?

I hope the meloxicam suits you. For the sake of your stomach, try to take it with or straight after a full meal.

@FionaW - So far I feel really weird from the meloxicam. It's only 7.5! Weird how? Woozy. Yikes. Can't wait till it's out of my system. Maybe if I decide to take it again, I'll take half.

Oh, our messages have crossed!
I’ve never had a reaction like that from meloxicam - it sounds very unpleasant! I hope it passes soon!

@Jammy, If you are on tablets it takes meloxicam 4-5 hours to reach peak concentration. Could it be something else you are taking?

Yes. I seemed to absorb it the first three and a half months, 3 or 4 a day! But I started to wean off it, and lately even 1 tab was too much, then 1/2 tab was too much. I thought it was good at 1/4 tab but then I couldn't sleep all night!

I'm not on anything else. I felt it kick in an hour or hour and a half after I took it (around 4:50 pm). It made me feel sort of drunk, woozy. Man, I am a lightweight! I did take a Tylenol at 8:00 pm. Anyway, I'm okay six hours later, but I don't think I will do that drug either.

@EalingGran - So I really feel I am beginning to get my life back!

Sorry, couldn't figure out how to copy that quote here, but anyway, THAT IS GREAT NEWS!

@Jammy , I remember that what I did was use paracetamol/tylenol regularly - almost literally like clockwork. I don’t find them particularly useful when I take just one or two doses. But I followed doctors’ advice and took four doses per day, pretty much exactly every six hours, and they started to become pretty effective. And around four months after my THR (the same stage as you and your knee now ?) I was able to give up the tramadol and control my pain entirely with Tylenol,I admit I was surprised! I don’t know if you’ve already tried this, but if not, it might be worth a go.

Agree with this.
I used to think paracetamol was pretty useless but it does work if you take it regularly. I had it IV in hospital a few weeks ago, to bring my temperature down, when I had septicaemia and I was surprised how effective it was.

@Jammy,
No need to quote if you are replying to the post directly above your reply. You can also mention the member you want to address by using the @ sign in front of their username (no space) and type your reply. Not quoting whole messages saves a lot of space on the page, and also saves duplicate reading.

If you want to quote just a line in a post, highlight that line.

At the bottom of the post you will see:

Like/ +Quote/ Quote this message.

Click the +Quote

When you get to the reply box, you will see where it says “insert quotes” Click that and it will put your highlighted area into your reply.

Oh, I see. I do put the @name before responding, I think. Thanks! I'm used to just copying and pasting!

You are welcome. I think it's so much easier to just quote the section you want to highlight like I just did on your post. As you see, at your bell, you were notified that I quoted you. If you copy and paste no one is notified about it like they are when you quote.

@FionaW - It seems I take Tylenol every six hours, but I haven't kept track of it. I really need the Advil also. That seems to help a lot with my aches, while Tylenol helps with the pain. I might try 1/2 meloxicam after lunch today! Honestly I don't know why my knee still hurts after all this time. It seems more numb feeling but I still feel some discomfort in every step when I walk, and it zings or aches at night, usually 2:00 - 3:00 am. Wondering if the rest of you have had pain going on this long.

I don't remember aching with walking every step at 4 months ( or not beyond very slight)but I am sure I still had nighttime aches. That is only really lessening in last month. I still use my Cryocuff as a bit of a comfort blanket resting on my knee to go to sleep but no longer need to refill it if I wake to go to the toilet.

However when I think about it I was back on Naproxen- so that probably helped. It is only in the last month to 6 weeks that I have been off all painkillers and relatively pain free or low pain level.
I did stop for a spell at around 10 weeks to try and sort out whether my hip pain came back/ if I was going to need hip surgery. Then restarted Naproxen because my back was bad and my knee got more achey as well.
It probably isn't a fair comparison for you to compare your pain with mine or others because I/ we may be tolerating effective painkillers better.

I’m only 10 days out from my TKR, so I can’t answer that question. I do know that I took tramadol until at least 12 weeks after my *hip* replacement, and paracetamol/Tylenol regularly until about 18 weeks. By that point, I was swimming regularly and doing Aqua fit, and exercise in water probably did more than anything else to strengthen my muscles and reduce my pain. I can’t wait to get back in the pool this time!

I know I did, Jammy. I was still on regularly scheduled Tylenol and Ibuprofen at that point, as recommended by @Jockette. And definitely remember feeling discomfort with every step, as well as discomfort and swelling in the evening.

@beachy - I know! Never fear, though. I still have the tight band feeling going on, my knee looks like a club, and my walking's not good. So there's that! I still am considering staying in bed until Dec 20th on which day I will be all better. :)
