THR When can I get back to the gym?<

Hi @erwrightie
Sorry you were advised to refrain from participating in the cycling event. I know it meant a lot but you're gracefully accepting it which is heartening to read. There will be other opportunities. I'm happy you received the green light to return to the gym for upper body workouts. At least you'll have something you find fulfilling to focus on. I hope all else is going well for you.
Happy Thursday!

Thanks @Layla I was a little gutted but then I’d rather move the event and have a healthy hip then take the risk and something awful happens. Luckily the Eurostar will let us move our tickets!

Yes everything else is going great, the doctor said my incision is healing really well and is really neat (I can thank my surgeon for that). Still stiff and tight but I’m hoping that will eases the more mobile I get xx

Worry not! This will ease with time. Still early days for you.

@Jaycey did you find that you had more mobility in your hip than pre op? I’m not aiming to do the splits or anything but I’d like some more rotation in my hips. At the moment I feel like that is just totally unachievable, so looking for some reassurance that it is possible x

did you find that you had more mobility in your hip than pre op
No, not immediately post-op. It took quite awhile for both my hips to feel like they were moving smoothly. My left hip collapsed prior to surgery and it took many months to regain good mobility on that side. I didn't limp around as long with my right hip so it was not as difficult to get mobile. Just keep moving - walking is the best mobility builder. Muscles and tendons need to firm up around the joint again after all the trauma of the procedure.

@Jaycey thanks for the reply! Oh gosh a collapsed hip sounds awfully painful. How are both your hips now?

I stopped doing the exercises that the PT gave me on the advice of @Josephine and I’ve had to take two trips into London to get to the hospital I was operated in so lots of walking!

My hips are fine now. I really don't even think about them. I have some stiffness in the early morning but that's mostly due to existing lower spine issues.

Where did you have your surgery? I was London based for my RTHR.

Gosh your planned ride sounds wonderful - do it next year! One thing I am finding is that cycling is actually pretty easy on my hip, and I am sure you'll find that, too - but not "244 miles at two months" easy. Right now it is so much more important to increase activity in little tiny baby increments so that you don't set yourself back six months or more before you even realize it. One thing my physical therapist said that hit home was that at 8 weeks it was fine to cycle, but to be aware of the risk of a fall and dislocation.

I know that cancelling your adventure :sad:was likely dissapointing...but this surgery was a big deal and you only get to recover the best way one time.

Gauging mobility/flexibility at one month out is tantamount to lunacy.

Do not worry.
Lots and lots of improvement and this patient investment in what we all hope to be our forever hips is well worth it!
You are doing fine!

Healing mojo coming your way:happyfeet:

@Jaycey I had my THR at UCLH

@Scarab yes I think I was being really optimistic with my expectations. I think I was also naive about how quickly I would recover. Someone genuinely told that because I was young id be back to normal at 6 weeks but 3 weeks post op I can feel that I won’t be back to normal in another 3 weeks

@Mojo333 thanks for the reply. The surgeon said she was happy for me to do the cycle in October so we are going to move it until then. I need all the recovery I can get but being patient with it is extremely difficult when all I want to do is get up and go to the gym or bend down and lift my son up!

Xx

UPDATE: So I saw the physio yesterday and she is honestly amazing. She specialises in hips and has gone through hip surgery herself. She taught me how to safely get on and off a bike a long with other things to strength my glute muscle or lack of at the moment. So today, I went to the gym and did a 15 minute cycle with little resistance and also did an upper body workout with light weights and I feel amazing mentally and physically. I feel so proud of myself as sad as that sounds

Hey there
Just noticing you are almost a month post op already! Time flies.
It's nice to read you've found a Physio you can relate too and especially one who's experienced hip surgery, herself. I think you have good reason to feel pleased with your session today. Consider icing preventativly in an effort to feel just as good tomorrow as you do today. Yay for you! :happydance:
Wishing you a wonderful weekend. :)
@erwrightie

Well done, that @erwrightie! (very hard to pronounce, your moniker!)No wonder you feel proud of yourself. I went back to the gym for the first time yesterday too and woke up this morning thinking "never again" but by this afternoon I was planning my next session. Good to see progress, isn't it? Happy weekend! :yay::dancy:

Hi :hi: @erwrightie
Happy One Month Anniversary!
I hope you're doing well.
Wishing you a lovely week as you continue on your healing journey!

Hello! Thanks for all the replies, I’ve been to the gym 4 days this week. On Monday I cycled 3 miles with VERY light resistance in 15 minutes and today I managed 3.5 miles in the same time so I’m getting stronger. My physio has given me exercises to regain the strength lost in my glute and I’m taking steps without the crutch in the house but can’t do very many as my muscles get tired.

My physio has also given me stretches to start getting the mobility back in my hip. I currently can’t bed my leg past 90 degrees. Not because of the restrictions but because my leg just won’t bend past 90 degrees. She said I would get this back once restrictions are lifted. Has anyone else had this and got the flexibility back?

I also wanted to ask whether people had restricted movement in abducting their effected leg? I’m still finding that I can’t abduct my leg (because the muscles remember I can’t do it). Again physio has given me stretches to slowly help it but I can’t help thinking I’m going to be stuck not being able to abduct that leg. Has anyone else had restricted flexibility in their effected leg and it got it back post surgery? X

Hi there you're doing really well. Many congrats. I had bilateral on feb 19th 2019 so a little longer than you in terms of recovery but am 65 so you have age on your side! At 7.5 weeks have now been given the all clear as of yesterday re restrictions but of course whilst that's great the ability of your body to get back to where it was in terms of glutes, quads etc is a long slow process. I was super fit before - gym/pilates/cross country high speed walking etc etc so all of this is rather frustrating. However, I was talking to my physio and my surgeon re my lack of abduction (plus not being able to bend my knees beyond 90 deg). Both have said that because in my case I had not been able to abduct for years (bone spurs) then muscles/ligaments have become like concrete so even though hip says yes they say no! OS said I can go back to horse riding eventually but I said if I can't mount fact chance!

Anyway, it's going to be about targeted stretching and strengthening all down my inner thighs plus hip flexors etc etc- not a quick fix - but am told if I stick with it I'll get there. So I hope and am sure with your determination you will too … only a lot sooner than me I would think!

@erwrightie, you are just past a month after surgery ... your hip has a long way to go ... It's still in the basic healing process ... No, I could not abduct my hip much a month after surgery ... or much two months ... I'm seven months in and I can do so now.

Your hip will continue to get better and stronger.

I can abduct my first hip fine. Couldn’t at all post surgery because my hip abductors were basically atrophied.

One month out on the new hip I can do some if I’m standing, very little lying on my side. Those muscles are still trying to wake up and get with the program.

PS...at least for me a lot if the swelling is near the abductors. I imagine that is part of the ROM issue, at least for me.

@hbl thanks! I hope your recovery is going well. I was super strong before surgery which I think has helped me quite a bit to be honest. I really struggled in the first few weeks but in the last 2 weeks I’ve made leaps and bounds. I think because my physio gave me more confidence to be honest.

I believe we have a similar issue. My hip says yes but my muscles say no and they really strain and hurt if I try and push past it. I’ve been doing some stretches and massaging the muscle that attaches to the pubus bone but I’m really anxious that I’m going to be stuck unable to abduct my hip

@Going4fun did your muscles not allow you to abduct post surgery? What helped in enabling you to do so? I know I have a long way to go in the recovery processes but I just need reassurance that I will be able to move my new hip much better than I could my old.

@tollertwins did you do anything to help you abduct that hip?
