What things do we need to have at home for Bill after his surgery? I am sure there are certain, must haves. Thanks.

Sandie

Patience---Patience---Patience---that is what is most needed...

However...One thing that I bought at the hospital were two giant ice bags---throw them in the frezer and have them ready whenever they are needed. I had a bilateral, so I came home with a walker...then crutches, then a cane. Lots of pillows. Those reacher/grabber thngies I bought, but never used.

A "throne type toilet", as I couldn't bend my knees far enough---get one that can be taken apart so he can eventually use it to sit in the shower, too.

My best to you and your husband,

Tim C.

You will find that everyone's needs are different but what I benefited the most from was an icing machine. They can cost about $200 if you straight up purchase one but I bought mine used on eBAY for $35. Some people get to take one home from the hospital so you might want to ask. Some of the brands are Polar Ice and DonJoy Ice Man. With these machines, you put ice and water in a cooler and ice cold water is pumped through a pad that is wrapped around the joint. It feels great and lasts several hours verses a typical ice pack kept in the freezer. Good luck!

In the hospital they provided ice gel packs that were 12 inches long and 6 inches wide. They come with a cover that holds 2 of them and they mold around the knee. I found they keep cold for about 3 hours. I have an extra set which is in the freezer so when the ones I am using start warming up, I just take them out and put them in the freezer and take out the set that was in the freezer. This way I always have cold ones to use.

I would talk to PT about where to buy them as the ones you can get in the store don't last very long. I think the ones I have are more for professional use.

Anyway, they are very convenient.

1jt@attime,

Where did you to go to find your icing machine on e-bay?
I tried putting in icing machine, ice machine etc... and could not get anything to come up.

I too got an ice machine, and it has been wonderful! I got the Polar Ice Kodiak. I got it thru my doctor's office. It was $215. This was the best $215 i've ever spent. I also had a recumbent bike. I'm sure glad I had this. It has really helped with my ROM. It also seems to loosen things up! Any other ideas, I'll post them!

Carolinagirl,

Search by the brand names on eBAY. Polar Care or DONJOY Iceman, I just did a search on both of these and found a whole bunch for sale.

I don't have an exercise bike at home but do have a bicycle peddler. You put the pedals up to the wall and sit in a chair in front of it. It's a great replacement for the first few weeks if you don't have a bike. I looked on eBay and they sell for about $25 delivered and new.

Another form of exercise I use and I've brought up here from time to time is a skateboard. I have a SpongeBob skateboard that I bought for $10 that I use to glide my leg back and forth. This was especially usefull with my first knee replacement after I returned to work and was stuck at a desk all day. I would use it throughout the day to keep my knee from stiffening up.

Those are three of my favorite recovery items that didn't cost a lot. Karen

If you are not into Ebay, I bought my a pedal exerciser from the following website

https://www.healthproductsforyou.com

Search Pedal Exercise and they have 20 models.

I also bought from them a foam roller that I find easier to use than rolling up a towel.

This site also has bath chairs, toilet aids and bars and just about anything else you might need

Thanks Simon, I guess I was sounding a little eBAY crazy there and I'm really not. I do buy a few things from them occasionally...more, recently then normal but there are definitely plenty of other places to get needed products.

Thanks Karen and Simon.

I found quite alot of the icing machines on e-bay.
I have a air-dyne bike, I am still riding it (very tenderly) trying to keep my knee loose before surgery. I think I just may bid on a couple of those ice machines I saw. Not bad prices at all!
Thanks again for the info.
5 days to go!!!!!!!!!!
