Sandie & Bill, at a minimum you might ask the surgeon to explain the procedure to you in detail, telling you what brand of replacement joint he will be using so that you can research it on the internet. Also, if you haven't asked before, you might want to know how many of these surgeries he performs each year (it should be hundreds) and what problems his patients have had following surgery. The surgeon should also explain as much detail as possible about recovery, pain management, at-home and outpatient therapy. Find out what rehab items will be covered by your insurance - crutches, walker, potty seat, etc. Find out what your options are for anestesia....there can be several things to consider (totally asleep, spinal block, femoral block). This should give you a start. I would write out at least some questions in advance so you don't forget anything. Good luck and post here often for support.
