What questions should we ask at Pre Op? I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Sandie & Bill, at a minimum you might ask the surgeon to explain the procedure to you in detail, telling you what brand of replacement joint he will be using so that you can research it on the internet. Also, if you haven't asked before, you might want to know how many of these surgeries he performs each year (it should be hundreds) and what problems his patients have had following surgery. The surgeon should also explain as much detail as possible about recovery, pain management, at-home and outpatient therapy. Find out what rehab items will be covered by your insurance - crutches, walker, potty seat, etc. Find out what your options are for anestesia....there can be several things to consider (totally asleep, spinal block, femoral block). This should give you a start. I would write out at least some questions in advance so you don't forget anything. Good luck and post here often for support. There is always someone available who can address whatever concerns you might have.

Jamie,
Thank you so much. We really don't know what to expect and you have helped us a lot. I can see this site is going to be wonderful for help and support.

You also might want to go back and read some of the old threads. There is a LOT of information there and some of the posts might generate some additional questions. The bottom line is that you need to understand exactly what is going to happen and be comfortable with the surgeon and the hospital where the surgery will be performed. Best of luck to you!!

The only thing I wish I had asked about is what is my pre-surgical range of motion and how is that likely to affect my recovery.

otherwise, I got great info from my OS and the hospital. (They do so many of these they have a big book and pre-surgery class you can take.)

There's also a good thread at the top ogf this forum called How to choose a surgeon and a prosthesis which contains some useful information and relevant questions. You are wise to compile these before you go. Often when we get in the consulting room and in front of the surgeon, everything goes out of your head!
