today i had my pre op and talked to anesthesiologist. he said that i could have my epidural, but still I must have general anesthesia. I am so confused. he said i would have a tube down my throat to breathe for me, but then relented and said to ask my OS about heavy sedation with propofor(i may misspell it) what is this all about?

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Creblue, I don't understand completely....was there some reason he gave for not doing the spinal?

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Creblue.....are you saying that you are worried now about the procedure? Or just trying to get some clarification?

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Por favor??? What!!! Cre,,,,, YOU better get this clarified!!!Nothing wrong with getting everything spelled out before your surgery!!!

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

,,,,,in english!!!!

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

THey spelled it wrong. Propofol is a short-acting intravenous nonbarbiturate sedative agent used for the induction of general anesthesia

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Haha!!! Pat to the rescue!!! :). Yikes!!!

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Propofol - milk of amnesia. (it's a white liquid)

Good stuff. Ask for it by name. This can be used to keep you relaxed and unaware during the noisy procedure that is a total hip. It hits you like a freight train and leaves you with little recollection of anything really. A nice supplement to the spinal/epidural.

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Dave is that the same stuff they give you before a colonoscopy?? The stuff they injected into my arm last week was white! Just curious......:sct:

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Several drugs are white liquids, Peta.

creblue, whilst the general idea of using a spinal is to avoid the consequences of the GA, for hip replacements, there are many anaesthetists who still prefer to use the GA. Bad luck that you got one of them!

I had GA and had no real problems with it. I was told since in the past I had a disc problem it was safer to have GA and not risk a spinal hitting the wrong thing.

Cle, the tube down your throat is not bad. You are not awake when they put it in.

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

I didnt know about the tube till a day later. My throat was a lil sore. I think it went away that night though. Just drink something soothing. It will be fine...

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Cre.... Stop worrying like this!!! You will be fine!! Put all your nervous energy into positive thoughts of healing!!!!! :)

Re: what is propofor? (anesthesia?)

Please don't worry about the tube. You won't be a wake when they put it in or take it out. You probably want even have a scratchy throat.

I have had sooooooooo many surgeries and a GA is the only way. As I mentioned before just talk to your anesthesiologist and he will know what to use to take care of you.

I have never had any of the side effects from my GA use.
Had 4 kids that way and 15 surgeries. It is no problem.

Just save your energy for your recoup. You will do fine.:thmb:
