Stands for Manipulation Under Anisetic (know that's spelled wrong, but couldn't find the correct one quickly)

It is widely used in the US, much less in Britain and Canada.

Yep, John....it's a procedure where the surgeon manually moves your leg to bend the knee joint and break up any scar tissue that has formed. It's used when a patient reaches a "dead end" with their range of motion (ROM). It is usually very successful in allowing more movement in a short period of time.

I had one and it was amzing worked great for me...sore a few days that was all.............) oh and welcome............)

Thanks for the info everyone, I was just bewildered and couldn't find it anywhere. I was placed on a CPU for 4 weeks immediately after TKR and ketp it moving all the time due to the "Horror" stories of knees "locking-up" so I am completely oblivious to that condition. You guys are all great in your responses!!!!

I think that CPMs are greatly over-rated. What gets your knee going best is muscles with good tone and strength. A CPM doesn't do that - it's a continuous passive motion machine, meaning it the muscle contribute nothing to the activity. Use one by all means but do not expect it to achieve everything. It cannot and should not, be used instead of tone/strength improving exercises. For that you need walking, straight leg raises, heel slides and a stationary bike.
