Josephine, you and others have mentioned using a TENS machine in some of the threads. What exactly is that and what does it do for you?

Okay....but how does it work? Is it something you have to use in outpatient therapy? What is it supposed to do for you? Tiger, have you used it? Sounds a bit like wiring up the Frankenstein monser...but I guess that fits now that we are pieced together.

I've used one before. It sends out a low electrical current that blocks the pain..I worked very well after one of my surgeries.. They come in a small portable size now. You simply stick the pads on the effected area. The one I had used what I would call a volume control to adjust the current.

The best I can do for you right now is to suggest you google it. There are several really good explanations online.

Hey, it sounds good, Gat. Ever considered politics??

Well Skeet ,I have thought about it, but I really prefer staying in my role as a BS Advisor. The money aint quite as good, but it keeps people from diggin around in my past as much.

Boys and girls, behave or we'll turn off the TENS

Actually, it's TRANSCUTANEOUS ELECTRIC NERVE STIMULATION.
It's NOT B.S., it's hugely effective!
It sends electric stimulation to/thru the nerves to block pain along the neural pathway, interupting the pain response message back to the brain to break the cyclic nature of the pain cycle. Normally, pain causes spasm, whih causes more pain, which causes more spasm.
TENS interupts this pain.
Many physical therapists use it almost exclusively. I've been using one for years and found that being able to hook up to the $40 home/portable version has been hugely helpful in that I don't have to take a pill or be dependent on someone else to decrease my pain. I can hook up and "bam" pains down from a 6 or 7 to a 2.
Although the concensus is: pain IS what the patient says it is.... we did some "research" and found it did NOT help malingerers and hypochondriacs 99% of the time .... tid-bit to think about.... do your research.
Barb, R.N

Barb, I didn't mean to say the machine was BS, only that my explanation was. SORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Well, now I iknow stuff....thanks to all who provided "unsnotty" responses...gatiger, my friend....you have exceeded your dose of percs for the day. You are officially out of control.

And, Jamie, when exactly was Gat every IN control???

Expensive???? no, no, no.... if you order one on-line you can get as cheap as $25-30.... it's when you order thru your P.T. that the price gets doubled or even tripled because the supplier to the PT company wants their cut as well....
