After THR of both hips now 3 months old. forget about riding i am still worried about sitting on a bike. Because it involves lifting my leg above the level of bike and then sitting on it. is it a concern?? or should i avoid it for some more time and is there any chance of problems if we do it more often.

Hi...I have only had one THR so I am not sure of the issues of both thrs however.....if you tilt the bike sideways down then you wouldn't have to lift the leg so high. Girls bikes don't have a high bar.....
Are you talking about a real bike or an exercise bike? If its an exercise bike its should be stable enough to get on it via the pedal with one foot, sit up and slide your other leg into position. From another perspective, its early days at 3 months and I'm curious what is the rush to get on a regular bike? An exercise bike is a great thing....

Stay motivated that is the key to your recovery...its more a mind game than anything else

Well, people go back to riding horses which requires an even bigger lift to the leg. As long as the movement is smooth and not jerky, it should be fine - on a horse, that is.

Bikes? Don't worry about it. It'll be fine.

You will do just fine. If your confident enough to think you can do it,there is a very good chance you will have NO problems. Take it slow, tilt the bike like peeps have said and just trust your self. If you feel strong enough,,I would say go for it.:thmb:

I like Jo's comment about finding a smooth horse ,not one that's a jerk,,,or something like that,,,maybe just stick to the bike!:hehe:

It's not a problem! You are correct that it is a bit of a challenge getting your leg over the bike but it's pretty easy if you are careful. In addition, I think biking is about the best rehab you can do.

The reason why i am feared is my right hip still hurts when i walk for 10 min or so...its bearable pain, though xrays shows nothing wrong. its clearly a muscle pain i can feel it. so i am walking for a 1km daily so that muscles will be strengthened. so thats why i am still concerned abt lifting my right leg.

Are you taking pain killers for that?

ummm - I'd say so. I think you'll find they help with these issues. Pain stops you doing things! Don't need to be anything heavy duty just Tylenol or ibuprofen a couple of times a day.

A bike has been tremendous in my prep for hip surgery & post op. If you do choose to ride a real bike versus a trainer, lay the bike down on its side. Stand over it, and lift it up under you. I had to do that for the past year, while rehabbing my broken hip, and then riding in prep for my THR. I'll continue to mount and dismount the same way for a while.
If you know who Floyd Landis is, (pro bike racer) he has done the same thing for years. He fractured his femoral head ib 2002, and had to do the same mount & dismount method for years until his hip resurfacing was done in '08. He did it all through the Tour de France, and I saw him still doing it at the Tour of California last year.
Good luck & be careful.

Shame the same can't be done with a horse! :hehe:
