I messed up today. I'm at about 14 weeks and I had to do something way at the back of a small closet. I kneeled down on BOTH knees on the carpet - something I haven't done at all yet. I was okay while doing the chore, but right after and the whole rest of the day (and now into the night)....MY KNEE HURTS in all sort of strange places. It must be too soon to kneel. I'm so sorry I did it now. I'm gonna take it easy tonight and tomorrow. But this happened as we were packing to leave our lake cottage, so after the incident, I spent the next several hours loading up stuff, moving big flower pots, hauling a mattress and box springs up the hill to load in the truck....you know....typical packing stuff. My husband was definitely doing his part, but there is just a lot to do to pack up to go or return from the lake. The good news is that my knee felt fine on the 3-hour trip home. I drove. It only started hurting when I got out of the truck and started helping to unload. I only helped with the mattress and decided hubby could do the rest. I'm hoping it's just swelling and some icing may help. I'll probably be able to elevate and ice here in an hour or so.

So my big question is.....has anyone else knelt down and then regretted it like me? Where did it hurt and how long did the pain last?

I've knealt two times for communion but I'm further along than you are. It didn't hurt...was a little uncomfortable, though (mostly just squeams me out!)

I kneeled once and it was okay, but I don't want to do it again. I was a few weeks further along than you are now, but not much. Not very comfortable plus my OS was worried about me cracking my kneecap. So, if I kneel he says it has to be on a padded surface or with pads on my knees.

I am sure you will be fine, you just exercised a new part of the knee and it tends to rebel for the first couple of times.

I've knelt once and did it without thinking about it. I didn't stay down long and was sort of supported by my hands. It dodn't really hurt. I mentioned it at PT and my therapist said that I should not be on my knees at all. She said the problem is stress on the bones where the pins are causing stress fractures. She also mentioned padding. I didn't plan on never getting on my kness again! I guess I'll just try to wear knee pads and keep it to a minimum.

Who has their own knee caps and who has new plastic ones? Does that make a difference for kneeling? I imagine it might. I have my own, and think it may make it easier/better. But I haven't tested that theory out yet. No hurry either.

The other day that I was trying to pull a storage container from under the bed....It was stuck on something and the more I pulled the madder I got. I ended up on my knees crawling around a king size bed..Got the container out. I didn't have a problem with the knee, however, it is a really thick carpet with a good pad.
If I had thought of it, I probably wouldn't have done it.
I have a new knee cap..

Jennifer,
I will be having my own knee caps with the metal backing to allow it to slide on the new metal joint. They will be cutting the knee cap in half horizontally and attaching metal to the back with plastic behind it, I believe.
I am having the Johnson & Johnson Depuy Rotating platform cemented knees put in on 6/18. Did you watch the surgery online before you had it done. I found it to be very interesting. I am one of those people who likes to know what is happening or going to happen to my body. Just how I am.......
Best,
Crystal

Thanks to everyone for the support. My knee still hurts this morning. But it is sort of hard to tell if it's from the kneeling or all the other stuff I did yesterday. The "good" knee hurts some too, so that leads me to believe at least some of the kneecap pain I have is from the lifting and carrying. I iced last night and it did feel better. I'm gonna take it easy for a while and see if it gets back to normal.

yes crystal. I watched a video. Jamie, I'm glad your knee(s) feel better.

Jennifer:

As you know we are twins (same day surgery). I heard all this stuff about
kneeling and was deathly afraid of it. Then I got myself in a situation at
about 8 weeks where I couldn't get up without kneeling and I did it and it
was not pleasant but not painful. Lately I've kneeled on padded surfaces
(probably the hardest was a padded carpet) and its OK but no long standing
pain. I think I have the retred kneecap (natural on the front, plastic on the back)

I know I have my own kneecap, but don't know if it is backed up by plastic or metal or something else. After surgery, I asked if I got to keep my own cap and was told yes. I'll have to ask more questions at my next appointment in the fall.

I Do Not Ever Want To Kneel!!!!! The Very Thought Makes Me Queezy, So Very, Very Queezy. I Can Touch The Scar, Move The New Knee Cap Back And Forth Like The Therapist Wants But I Cannot Stand The Thought Of Kneeling. Even Long Pants Have Not Bothered Me And I Favor Leggings With Long, Long Tee Shirts. But Reading About All You Guys Kneeling, Especially Doug Crawling Around The King Size Bed Pulling On A Storage Container. I Think It Is Because The Other Day I Was Fixing The Bed And A Plastic Container Was Sticking Out On My Side Of The Bed And I Gave It A Jerk To No Avail But No Way Did I Try To Kneel. Instead I Asked My Good And Wonderful Hubby To Help Me Move It And He Fixed The Whole Problem. Please Be Careful Forum Friends, I Don't Want Anything To Happen To Any Of Our 'knew' Knees. Rowdy

I have to say that my knee is better tonight. I don't think the kneeling was the main problem....I think it was probably more the lifting and carrying that made my knee hurt so bad. I've taken it really easy today. This morning it even hurt to go down stairs, but tonight it is not so bad. I think the pain will disappear soon. I WANT to be able to kneel on that new knee at some point in time without pain!!!

The issue is not what is inside your knee but the outside - in other words, it's the scar that makes kneeling difficult, not the prosthetics, and I mean pain, soreness and tightness from the scar. Nothing of that nature that you do could have any injurious effect upon the prosthetics.

Josephine, this make a lot of sense wrt my lack of problems kneeling.
My surgeon decided that rather than give me a new scar he would go
in over my old scar which was off to the side of the kneecap. So I
don't kneel on scar tissue.

How very considerate of him! Actually, that's why many surgeons do a curved incision rather than a straight one.

My os said also will follow an old scar to avoid what they call a "flap" because sometimes if they do an incision that creates encircled skin & tissue, sometimes the stuff in the circle will die leaving another problem.

Oh yes - if the curve is too curved, that can happen. Therein lies the skill - knowing the difference between enough of a curve and too much of one.

Josephine....this was just the medical expert information I was hoping to hear! Thanks and I promise I will no longer worry about kneeling and possibly damaging something inside my knee or leg. It is such a blessing to have you on this forum!!! THANKS!!!

I Could Not Get Your Kneeling Out Of My Mind Yesterday, Ended Up So Nauseous I Couldn't Eat Dinner Or Even Later. Amazing What Bothers Us And How Other Things Just Wash Over Us As Though It Were Nothing. Anyway Glad To Hear Your Knee Is Better Today. I Was Wondering If Carrying The Mattress And Loading And Then Unloading It Had Anything To Do With The Pain. And, Yes, Isn't It Wonderful To Have Josephine On The Forum With Her Advise And Expertise. She Is Truly A Blessing For Us All. Rowdy
