I live in the pittsburgh pa area i have had a MD say i should have a hip scope done does anyone have any experence in these and is there any specialist in this field in my area i am very confused.

Clarrys,

I live in southern california and had a hip scope on Feb 1st. It was performed by my orthopedic hip surgeon who later did my right hip replacement.
My MRI arthrogram showed a small amount of arthritis and a possible labral tear. His plan was to do microfracture surgery and clean out the joint. He kept telling me before that he could not make any guarantees as he did not know what he would actually find.
Well , they did do the microfracture surgery (a procedure to try to grow some cartilage), but found widespread arthritis on the femur and the acetabulum. He told me then, the prognosis was not good and I would probably need a replacement in 6 months to a year.

I gave the arthroscopic procedure 3 months to heal (it never got any better), then decided to have the replacemnt on June 6th.

Let me know if you have any more questions
The nurses in the pre op room said they had not heard of many hip scopes being done.

It's possible to scope any joint in the arms or legs - apart from the fingers and toes, of course! But shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle are all commonly done though some more than others.

Want to try and explain what you are confused about and we'll see if we can help.

I had 2 scopes before my THR at Ohio State University. I had hip impingement with a labral tear. The first scoping was to reshape the femeral head and acetabulum and to also repair the tear. I ended up having it redone 3 months later because the cartilage repair didn't take and had to just be removed. I had the THR done 5 months after the
2nd scope. A co-worker of mine had the same issue and had her scoping 2 weeks after I did and she did great. Her repair took and she said she's never felt better. My surgeron does specialize in hip scopes.
