Hi this is great to be able to see that everyone is different and what eva works for you go with it.

Hi and Welcome. You are a few days ahead of me and I am just trying to get off the cane. I do around the house. It does hurt but I figure I have to try right ! I just stay close to walls and things. I still have swellng as well. I think I am on track or thats what I am told. Swelling can take awhile. I have some pain more achey then anything I think. Well I hope that helps. Others will post as well. Take care and post anytime......Hang in there....

Welcome Wendy from Down Under! Give yourself more time....you're still very early in your recovery! :)

Hi Wendy

I had mine on 3/27/09 RTKP. I sometimes still use the cane. Depends on how the knee is doing.

I still have swelling and a lot of stiffness. I get on the bike for a couple of mins to get the stiffness out. Then I will sit for a while and have to get on the bike again.

When I walk without the cane I limp sometimes. I have to think about not limping. I also walk stiff legged sometimes. I have to get out of that because my OS already mentioned it.

I go back the end of the month and hope everything will be OK
at my check up. I am at 115 rom maybe a little more have not had it measured in a few days.

Just hang in there you will feel better. The weather does effect the way my knee feels. If it is raining and storming, I have to use the cane as I will not be able to walk.

Keep posting

Hi Wendy, my LTKR was on the same day! I still use a stick on longer walks, sometimes a hiking one and sometimes Nordic walking poles. A stick (or cane as it's called in the US) gives you a feeling of security against tripping. I still have a bit of a limp and pain and swelling so the doc gave me some compression socks and water tablets. Like me, I expect you thought recovery was quicker and easier! Keep at it, I'm sure we will get there!

Hi Wendy, and welcome to the forum.

Recovery is a very very long process. No one had warned me how long! Everyone progresses at different rates, even two knees on the same person take different times, as I have found. My second TKR has been much easier than my first.

Just keep doing what you can - a bit of walking, with a cane is fine, exercise bike if you have one, and you'll improve little by little. Let us know how you get on. Each little improvement is worth a celebration!

Using the cane is also good for letting people know you need some space, they don't bump into you as much when you are walking around. I was lucky I hardly even needed the cane once I got home, at about 5 days, but I still carried it as a warning to the public not to bump me. Walking was one thing but if I landed on my butt I may have never gotten up!!!!! :)

Wendy,
Welcome to BoneSmart! I had BTKR last June 18th. I am approaching my first full year anniversary. My recommendation to you would be to concentrate on rolling your foot forward from heel to toe when you walk and making your strides the same length. I believe this will help build your confidence and eliminate the limp. It helped me tremendously!
Progress comes slowly, but by the time you hit the 4-5 month mark you will feel like a new person.........

Even at 6 months PO, I still have to remind myself, heel, toe, heel toe, and take normal strides, I'm not immobile anymore.... but boy oh boy does my body have a good memory. So Crystal made a really good point. Trust your bionic bits, they will do what they need to do.

Hi Wendy....welcome to BoneSmart. Everyone's posts above are right on the mark....you are early in recovery and it sounds like you are doing fine. Don't hesitate to use your cane for a while. It's okay.....in fact it's MUCH better to use it than to limp. It will take a while for your muscles to strengthen.

In addition to icing and elevating your leg, you need to be on some type of pain medication if you are still experiencing pain (and at 2 months, most people still have fairly significant pain and are on a schedule for prescription pain meds). Be kind to yourself, don't push too hard....you'll get there. Recovery from this surgery takes quite a while. Even after the scar is healed on the outside, there is LOTS of healing going on still inside.

Hi Wendy from Oz! You're doing great and welcome to BoneSmart!

Hi Wendy just checking / and concerned are you feeling any better. I sure hope so. Please let us know when you can....

Hi everyone that you all for all your helpfull information. Im doing fine i think. Its about 10 weeks post op now and Im back at work 4hrs per day 3 days a week Physio once a week and I swim twice a week. Still have stiffness after sitting and sleeping. Not using the stick but still tend to limp. Still have pain at night sometimes use the ice still. Have a bend of about 113 to `115 . When does it all end ahahahah I am feeling so much better than before I had the surgery but not really normal yet. How and I going????Thanks Wendy

Hi Wendy I responsed to the PM. Sorry I hope you got it. I seem to send them to randon people...lol...Sorry random people....You sound like you are doing great....keep it up...We are all pulling for ya!!!!

Good to hear from you, Wendy. Sounds like you are doing fine. You might want to try and use the cane a little if you find yourself limping. That means your muscles are just tired out and need a little boost. Better to have the cane with you and not need it for a while longer than to limp. Limping can put stress on not only your new knee but also other body parts. Even though you are doing very well, you are still pretty new in recovery. Just doing what you're doing by going to work this soon is giving your body a workout!

Good to hear from you Wendy, sounds like you are doing well.

Take care,

Welcome, Wendy.

I had my left TKR on March 18th. I JUST stopped walking with the cane last week. I've made two trips to the grocery store (one with the cane in my trolley, and yesterday, left it in the vehicle). The first trip went well. Yesterday I was so knackered by the time I got out of the store, I considered having one of the teen-age bagboys go get my truck so I wouldn't have to walk across the car park. (I blame the 34 Celsius heat we had yesterday).

I still use my cane for looong walks- like tomorrow, I'll be going to the university hospital in the big city because my mom's having surgery. That place is a maze of screwed-up hallways and random elevator walls... I'll NEED the cane then!

Ironically, tomorrow before we leave for Madison, I have my final physical therapy appointment!

I love this message board because it answers my questions almost before I've had a chance to ask them. I wish I'd have found it before my surgery instead of after.
