This past weekend I did a lot of walking. The weather was absolutely beautiful here in NJ. During my walk, I experienced a very interesting/weird feeling...

As I released my operated leg to take another stride, I felt my hip kind of "snap back". It's a hard feeling to describe -almost as though I was taking too long of a stride and my body wanted me to take a shorter step. It made me shout out "ooooh!!" It didn't hurt at all, just a really strange feeling.

Any other experiences like this?

I know this is a small price to pay for no pain, just sharing an experience.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend :)
Melissa

I haven't felt that, Melissa, but if I take too long a stride I feel kind of a pulling in my groin. I figured it was just ligaments stretching. Come to think of it, I haven't felt it lately, must be stretched! My guess is yours is probably ligaments and muscles just getting used to that new hip, too.

Had a great weekend here! It was 80+ today, and just last Wed. we had snow!

Boy, Melissa...I don't know. That's a new one for me, but if I was to guess, I'd say you guys are right that it's muscles and ligaments just finding their way with the new joint. Jo will probably check in soon with the real medical explanation....

That happened occasionally with my previously repaired hip. I never knew exactly what it was but assumed it was muscles or tendons or ligaments rolling over something. It never hurt for more than a few seconds but it was scary. I bet Karen is right.

I am glad you had nice weather and got a lot of walking in. I'm not sure if I experienced what you mention.
I did have some type of sensation like my hip kind of clicks back into place. It does not make any noise, just more like a sensation. I read that once the muscles get strong the sensation goes away.
I am not sure if that is what you are describing
judy

Hi there, I too have had sensation like what judy describes almost like a very subtle popping back into place of the joint. Can't remember it happening for awhile, but for several months, when I would bend over or stretch to touch my toes, I would get this feeling, very vague and not painful, of my joint going back into place.

At almost 8 months, I have found that minor aches go away quickly. Trust yours will too, Melissa. The only thing consistent is that when I have overdone it, I have some discomfort in my thigh area. Small price to pay for having my active life back.

Yes, the weather was great here in NJ this weekend. Won't even mind the predicted rain tomorrow.

I also think because of all your walking, your muscles and tendons are being awakened! Have you been feeling ok today? Because you are young and active, your new hip sounds like its settling in! :)

Hi Melissa,

Any other way to describe the feeling? Did it feel like the muscle was pulling - if so, which part of the thigh? Or was it more like the bone going back into the socket? Or something completely different?

Whatever it was, I'll bet it's a normal part of the leg settling in. I had a clunk for a while, like Judy's, which worried me, but the thread on this site about sounds from the new hip totally reassured me. There might be something there useful for you. Or wait for Jo - she'll know.

Meanwhile - enjoy it all.

Nick

Jo has nothing further to add because it's all pretty much been covered!

Thanks all -seems like it's the hip setting in. It only happened 1x so far during all of my walking.

Hurting -I'm feeling good today. Just woke up though -no walking yet. I'll keep you posted!

Me too Melissa......it still feels raw, like the healing capsule around the new joint is still forming.
When is it fully formed? 3 months? 6 months?

I can't wait until all restrictions are off!!! I have 5 years of lost fun to make up for!

I suspect it varies based on your health, weight, body type and bone density and the type of prosthetic used and whether or not it was cemented. I'm supposed to be able to start cycling outside at 3 months, so that tells me my body should have healed well at that point. I was also told that if I decided to run again in the future I was to wait at least 1 year and then slowly get into it.

So, it's obvious impact versus non-impact activities differ in the definition of all restrictions being off :-D

Scott! Just don't cram too much fun is too short a time,,,,neven after your restrictions are lifted! You'll be paying big time! Ease on in!!!!! :)

Hi Melissa--I can't say that I've had this feeling yet, but I am working on the weak leg release in my gait training. Even though I was a bilat, clearly my right leg is weaker so I kind of think of my right as my operated leg. One thing I was told in gait training was not to try to over-stride, or to make my strides too long. I just try to make my release the same as the other leg, in that I make sure I finish the release with some strength.
I can't begin to know whether your situation is a problem or not, but I can say that I have had funny things happening to my hip, and each time something happens, I become worried that it is the start of a more significant problem. I really am looking forward to my 1 month post op appt to ensure that there was not problem with the operation itself or the implants.
good luck on your recovery.
Tom

Thanks everyone -my boyfriend told me not to worry, but I just had to post. It's always reassuring to hear everyone else's experiences and advice.

Sneaking in here from work.....it may be my imagination, but even at almost 8 months, I see progress--and no more of those clunky feeling in joint for awhile. Yesterday it was less difficult to cross my legs (similar to your picture pre surgery Melissa, with right leg not as limber, but a real feat for me as I haven't been able to cross my right leg at all for at least 20 years.) I am also finding it more natural to sprint a little up hills, etc. Don't think I will be running as I can't see starting that now, but short stretches when I am in a hurry seem good for me.

Also, the achy stuff that folks have been talking about is much less. Jo, is it possible to still be feeling improvement this far out?

Laurie

Oh, I will. I don't want to screw things up! I'm not planning on running again but wanted to know what the doctor thought about it.

Laurie - that is great news that you're still seeing progress! Like you, I hope I can once again cross my legs, too.

I suspect it varies based on

your health, No!
weight, No!
body type No!
bone density and the type of prosthetic used No!
whether or not it was cemented. No!

None of these!

S Jo, is it possible to still be feeling improvement this far out?

Laurie

You can continue improving for 12-18 months.
