When I had my first TKR last October, I was pleasantly surprised that I dropped at least one size and was back in my "skinny clothes" about 2 months out. I just ate normally but somehow lost this weight that I'd been trying to lose for ages.

Now on my second TKR I think I've lost some again, YAY!

I was googling and found a couple articles that said healing of the tissue requires more calories and protein.

Have any of you lost weight too?

Hollie

I've lost around 30 pounds since the day I was admitted for surgery (March 18th). I know I'm not doing anything more active, and I'm eating the same foods. I figured mine was from water weight that I've had to deal with in the last few years because I've struggled with "unexplained edema" for the last four/five years.

But, now that I've learned it might be a normal part of recovery, I'm still not complaining! Its nice to step on the scale and see the numbers going progressively lower.

My jeans are really loose now and some clothes I couldn't wear last Summer now fit. I just can't wait till I can go back to real exercise. That's what I've missed the most in the last few years.

Josephine, our forum nurse, would know exactly but as I recall from previous posts about this, the weight is in ounces.

Well, you can always depend upon this forum to find out all sorts of tidbits of information like this!! I just dug out some old hip and knee prostheses and weighed them and found that, metal on metal or metal on plastic, they all weigh in at around 250-300gms (9-10½ ozs). The two I weighed were stainless steel and cobalt chrome. Titanium is a very much lighter material but I don't have a specimen in that so can't exactly say what it would weigh.

I don't care what the docs say, I think all this metal in my body makes scales inaccurate.

I asked my hip resurfacing doc how much weight I could subtract from the scale for that metal (titanium and cobalt I think), he said it weighs the same as bone. I didn't even ask my knee doc. I simply am not weighing myself anymore.

Kudos to your Frog Feathers for a loss of 30 pounds!!! I think I want a manipulation if I can lose more weight!

I sympathise totally Nana! I've actually put on about 3 kgs since I had my THR last October! Definitely going in the wrong direction! :(

I keep reading about people losing weight during their recovery from knee and hip surgery.......but it certainly didn't happen for me! Bit like when I was told I would lose weight while breastfeeding....................I'm STILL waiting for that to happen! (My youngest is 19)

I read all about loss of appetite on this forum before my TKR and was all ready to enjoy it --- and then I never lost my appetite and never lost a pound. so much for my dreams of as much chocolate ice cream as I wanted for a few weeks at least. (person)

Jo ---thanks for the answer. I found it online as well 15-20 ounces depending on the size of the implant. :thmb:

Barb, do you know how much the bone weighs that is taken out?

I keep trying to keep this weight off and so far I'm doing pretty good. Sometimes it's hard to get by on 700 calories a day though.

Hollie

Oh my, Hollie....700 calories!!!??? That seems pretty radical. Are you doing that under a doctor's advice? It's difficult to get all your body's nutritional needs at that calorie level.

You know Jamie, every woman I know in her mid to late 50's who has maintained her weight eats like this. I have talked to a doc about it and he said it was Ok if I took vitamins.

The bummer is I am only maintaining my weight, not losing a pound with these calories. You hit this age and it gets really tough. Also, it's the last 10 pounds which are notoriously hard to get off.

I'm just so happy I lost weight with my TKRs, I just want to maintain!

Hollie

I can't even imagine living on 700 calories. When I was in my yo-yo diet phase, I did 900-calorie diets to lose weight. That would work. But much later in life I learned how bad that was for my body because once I quit the diet and went back to normal eating, I'd gain the weight back and more. I believe it totally wrecked my metabolism....to do that so many years. Now I have the most efficient body ever....it probably could live on 500 calories!!

I'm glad you checked with your doctor and are taking vitamins. As you become more active, you will lose weight. Math says it HAS to happen unless you just lie in bed all day.

Good luck to you and I hope you are successful in getting to the weight you want to be. It's tough....but the rewards are great.

I was also a yo-yo dieter and it may have screwed up my metabolism. I used to lose on any of those nutri-system, etc. weight loss programs. Now that I'm over 55 I don't lose a pound on them.

I read an article the other day that said even though calories in vs. calories burned is true, diet is the most important factor in weight loss, rather than exercise.

I can't wait for that Resvertal (sp?) to become available. Have you heard about it? It works on rats, makes them skinny even though fed a high calorie/fat diet, gives them more energy for exercise, extends longevity. On 60 minutes they said it would be 5 years before becoming available but I keep seeing ads for supplements, wonder if they work or not...I would imagine not.

I bet you're kidding about living on so few calories, Hollie!!! Life's too short........gotta have a little fun and be a lttle naughty! :)

I eat a banana for breakfast, nothing else till dinner which I keep around 300 calories, have yogurt and fruit for dessert.

Once in awhile I will have wine. Otherwise just herbal tea. If I get hungry I chew sugarless gum.

I let myself go once in awhile, but try to keep to this regular schedule. My husband is really a light eater, so I don't have to fix big meals or see them in front of me.

It's so great to be back in my skinny clothes after the TKRs, and so very hard to lose weight, I'm just trying to maintain....you'd think I'd lose weight eating like that.

Yeah, I guess I'm no fun with food, but I can get naughty on a night out with the liquor!

Haha! Now THAT'S better! Girls just gotta have SOME fun!!! :)
