Hey All,

Just thought I'd add this, I would have wanted someone to tell me if they found these: Some of you may be wanting to purchase a walking cane to help with your recovery. About 10 days ago, I began searching the web for exotic, unusual, and premium canes, as I knew I'd be needing one soon. (I'm not there yet, but hopefully within a week or so...). Anyway, I spent several hours looking, and the majority of them looked the same. I finally found a website of canes and walking sticks created by an East European (Russian? not sure...) Artist named Boris Palatnik. I'm not trying to promote him and his work for any other reason that his canes are handmade works of art, and fantastic! I, myself, wanted something better than the average cane, and for those of you that can afford it, you should definitely check them out. They are not cheap, (average between $275-$600 U.S. Dollars), but even if you can't afford them, go to the website anyway. Being on a law enforcement salary, I really can't either, but after looking, I just HAD to have one! There are 26 different designs, one with many different options to suit anyone, including men and women both. After much decision, I finally decided on the Elephant, made of German Silver, (70% Copper, 30% Nickel), with 24Karat Gold plate on the toes, backsaddle, and tusks. The Elephant is mounted on your choice of 3 different type balls, (I chose the Green Snakestone, but he offers Black Granite, and yellow green onyx for that particular cane), and that is mounted on the cane itself, which is either Ebony wood, or Rose wood, or Iron wood. I got the Ebony. I also got the sword cane option, which is about an extra $100, but for me, it was worth it. (Most states the sword is illegal, but I'm LE, so, it's ok). He has many different styles that could suit anyone, including crook, ball, etc, and cougars, tigers, snakes, horses, etc. Anyway, each cane is made to order, and the guy has been making them for over 30 years, but I'm still anxiously awaiting mine. I wrote him an email to ask for a slight hopefull discount, (I said I was LE, and just had major surgery, and he called me personally the next day to discuss it); he gave me a 10% discount, so every cane is negotiable! I'm so excited! I can't wait to get it, and it should be here by the end of next week, or early the week after. I already know that this cane will become a treasured family heirloom, and I will cherish it until I pass it on to my (hopefully Son. Don't have kids yet, but trying!)

Ok, I've blabbed enough. If you are at all interested, I wanted to share what I found, and check it out for yourself.

I don't know the exact website, just do a search engine for "designer canes" and/or "Boris Palatnik". Please reply personally if you found one you like, and if you're getting one too!

Dalton,
You crack me up....I thought a cane was a cane was a cane. I had your basic generic kind with the the clamps to make it taller or shorter.
My grandmother lived to be almost 93 and was still driving. She would never have been caught dead with a plain cane. She lived in Dallas and was more your designer kind of gal. Still had her hair dyed black and looked like a million bucks when she passed. Her canes consisted of umbrellas, designer of course, or an acrylic cane, a designed burch wood cane. Just depended on her mood.
Send us a pic when you get yours. You will be the hit of the town....Cannot wait....Patty

Hey Dalton,

I too did not want a regular cane. More because they scream old to me . I never did the search. Yours sounds very exciting. I can't wait to see a picture. That is awesome that he called you.

They sound great, but not only a teachers salary, but unemployed!!!!
I got mine this week as my pt wanted to teach me how to use it and this is her last week with me. I borrowed it from our local convalescent aid society. I saw some interesting canes a few weeks before surgery when out with a friend. I just can not remember where!!!!!

I've got a paisley fold up cane that I ordered on-line for about $25. Nothing special but also not just a plain old boring one. You wouldn't believe that I've gotten a lot of compliments on my paisley cane from people. I guess it is a fashion statement, huh? It's definitely not going to be a lifetime keeper like this cane of Dalton's. Wow Dalton! I looked at the website and those are some fancy canes! You'll use it when you are an old man, huh? Very nice! Now THOSE canes are a fashion statement!

Oh now the competition is on! How can I be seen with my cheap flea-market cane when I can get a designer one? I've got a nice little folding job I got from Costco that I can always keep in my backpack for work, but it just doesn't have a study feel to it. I have seen some cute little numbers at CVS.

Oh my! They are STUNNING! Works of art for sure!

Here's the link broken link removed: https://www.borispalatnik.com/index.htm

Sofa King,
I got an adjustable one for Jim off e-bay with Deer (Buck) heads all over it. But I also surfed a bit and saw several like the one you want. They are amazing, but as you said, pricey and out of our range.

How long will it take to get once you order it? If this helps, the handle should hit you where your watch band is in your wrist. Or where the handle is on your crutches. But to play it safe, have PT measure you real quick so you can order it and get it in time to use. Cause Jim after 1 week is already working on walking without the cane now. So you may not need to use it long.

Goggled and checked out the web site. WOW nice canes. I can see how they will become an heirloom. Can't wait till you post that action shot of it.

Hey all!

After reading your replies above, yes, I'm BEAMING! I didn't think anyone would even bother to look or reply... yes, they are very nice! I really couldn't afford it, but HAD to be different, so... I splurged. I tried my old aluminum cane just a few mins ago that my Grandmother gave me a month before the surgery, and I can do it, but I'm still REALLY wobbly on my legs; I'm not going to push it, will stick with the walker until the OS or PT says different. I am SO excited about my new elephant cane though, and it should be here by the end of next week. Mr. Palatnik said they take about 2 weeks average to create, and when it gets here should be just about right on time for me... I do plan to use it (probably longer than I need it, because it will be so COOL!), but yes, eventually, I'll not need it, and probably display it in some fashion above the fireplace, when it will wait until I get OLD! LOL It was a pretty penny, but Jessica said I deserved it, because of what I've gone through, and going through..
Thanks Jo for posting the website for all to click, and I will definitely have the Wife take a pic or two of me and the cane to post here when it arrives!

P.S. Where and how do I post pics? Patty told me about the "lifestyles" section, but I couldn't find it on the thread page?

Dalton, you just choose the "go advanced" under quick reply below and click on the paper clip icon and follow directions there. A lot of people go through photo bucket, another web site but it's not necessary to use it to post. Karen

I had the same freeings at 2 weeks post op...if a cane was to be part of my P/T regimen, it had to be a bit stylish...especially for returning to work. My wife initially brought home one of those $15 drug store models...and I used it about a day ...then took it back.

Went on line and ordered a fancy carved wood model with a sterling silver inlaid band. It was about $40 total delivered...but I got a lot of compliments on my new "pimped out" look, and I felt really good using it as it was custom sized, sturdy, and really fit my hand.

It only was in use for about 4 weeks total...but it was worth every penny. It sits in a corner now collecting dust...but a part of my new life.

NEWWHEELS,

Would have loved seeing your cane. You need to put it in a Shadow Box...Dare not let it collect dust....lol.... Sounds like everyone is chunking the generic ones and moving UPTOWN.....Way to go.......Patty
