Is anyone familiar with or have used Voltaren Gel? My Doc gave me some to try and I wanted to know if anyone has had any success using this antiinflammatory. Thanks, Oldbones

Hi Oldbones! I've used Voltaren Gel for muscular strains and a sprained ankle a few years ago - but not for my arthritic hips. None of my doctors has ever suggested using it - have you found it helps at all?

I don't know if it's mind over matter but the Voltaren does seem to have helped. The only problem is you have to apply it 4x/day. I'm hardly compliant iwth once a day dosing. But, stay tuned more to follow! Oldbones

I've used Mobileve which is ibuprofen gel - much the same thing. It's okay but the effect is not all that profound. The intention of it is to treat ailments that are only skin deep, if you know what I mean! So I'm not at all convinced it would be that effective on something as deep as a hip joint. I would be delighted to be proven wrong, though. I think it might be the massage is more help than the drug.

BTW, remember that even though you're not taking it orally, the medication still gets into your system and has to be taken into account with all the other stuff you're on.

Do you think it would be useful to have a few massages before surgery to loosen up tight (and soon to be stretched and tighter) muscles. Does massage have a lasting effect? Whats the general opinion?

Hi Rachel,

As Jo says, can't hurt. I'd say that a skilled massage therapist would be of more value after the operation, but I wouldn't want to put myself in the hands of anyone who didn't know exactly what they were doing.

As for the duration of benefit, my experience is that massage can have anything from no effect at-all, to positive harm, to lasting relief. Depends not only on the skills of the therapist but also on the interaction between therapist and client, in part because body awareness is an important factor, and some therapists treat their clients like lumps of meat - not the best approach.

Enjoy it all,

Nick

Hi all,

I tried Voltaren Gel some months before my THR. Made no difference at all. Best thing for me was painkillers and a hot water bottle - or our devon rex cat against my hip - she gives off a Lot of heat :)
