Welcome to the forum, ShopGal. Glad you joined us! My best advice would be to try and not worry between now and the surgery date, follow your surgeon's guidance about recovery, be sure you have adequate pain medication during that period and don't rush too fast. This is major surgery and healing takes time and effort. But.....it will be WELL worth it when you get your life back.

Don't hesitate to post whenever you need support or have a question or concern. With so many members here, there will likely be someone who has gone through exactly what you are facing.

Good luck!!!

Hi, Welcome, I am 51 and had a hip replacement on June 6th. It is a wonderful part to replace, they really have it perfected if you have a good surgeon.
Have you taken a joint replacement class at the hospital?
Do you have the necessary items at home such as a raised toilet seat with handles, reacher grabber, stool softeners to combat the pain pills.
Do you have a walk in shower? Someone at home to help you when you first get home?
There are so many things to tell.
why don't you ask some questons, that might help us to get the right help to you.

Ok I am really tired and feel I am not making any sense now.

Welcome you will do great
Judy

Hello there - and welcome to BoneSmart! You don't share much about yourself so it's not really possible for us to address your concerns directly. Is it the anaesthetic/surgery you're worried about or the rehab after? Or both!

Many, many people are out of condition for the simple reason that, after many years of disability due to their arthritis, they haven't even been able to walk much let alone exercise.
But doctors are well used to working on people like this. It's not going to be much of an issue so please don't worry about it. And as many are in their 'autumn years' they often have other ailments like heart disease, diabetes, you name it! These are also well within the doctors' abilities to handle. It's what they spent years training for.

As for your overall fitness, well, at this moment you are what you are and like many before you, you have to start your rehab from where you are at. But to be honest, I doubt you'll fail to make good. It's amazing how a body can bounce back when the origin of the pain and disability is removed.

We'll be thinking of you on Tuesday and sending up prayers for you. In the meantime, feel free to bombard us with questions - major, minor, trivial - we takes'm all!

Welcome, Shopgal!
Jo, our high Priestess & Fount of Knowledge has spoken! You would be wise to ask her any questions you may have!
Good luck & keep posting! :)

Keep your chin up, have faith in your doctor and follow his/her directions, make sure you have a good support network to help out when you get home (this forum can even be a part of that with information and insight from others with experience), work hard on your PT but also listen to your body and tell your therapist what its telling you, get an ice pack and a heating pad ready, remind yourself when things get a little rough that you WILL get better a little every day but remember there may be some days you take one step backwards before taking two forwards...

Good luck and check back in with us when you get settled back at home.

Welcome, ShopGal! We are the same age and I had RTHR 3 weeks ago today. It was the best thing I've ever done for myself! If you have that bone on bone pain now, you will be amazed how soon after surgery you realize it is GONE! Just make sure to follow all directions and do your PT faithfully, and you will be so glad you had it done. Are you having general anesthesia or a spinal? I switched to spinal at the last minute, and was so glad I did - much easier coming out of it! Ask more questions - there are a lot of us here for you!

Thanks for all your support!!! Amazing!! I am 54 year young female, 5'2 and weigh around 200 + a few. I'm from Ohio.

I have a good surgeon. I am getting the surgery done at the hospital I work at. Sooooo that will help alot. And rehab will be done there also.
I went to the hospital and had an OT and PT person talk to me, about the long handled things I will be using, and showed me how to use a walker, etc. I have all the things I need at home as far as a walker, bedside comode, raised toilet seat, a seat for the shower, we have a shower/bathtub combined. My wonderful husband will be taking a week off after I get home to help take care of me.

I have been concerned about the surgery and keeping myself motivated.

Thanks for your encouragement Josephine!!!

ShopGal....the support is just starting for you! Wait until you see what's available on the "other side" of surgery if you need it!!! We'll all be thinking of you and waiting to hear from you.
