My husband (aged 47) has had continually problems with his right knee for many years and has undergone different types of surgery over the years. He recently saw a surgeon, privately, at the Oxford Specialist Adult Hip & Knee Surgery Group who said his next option was to have a Uni Knee fitted. He was told that he will need a five day stay in hospital and may be off work for up to 12 weeks. Does anyone out there have experience of this procedure?
Can the recovery time be that long or will be be able to return to work before then? He has a desk job.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi, dacw, and welcome to BoneSmart. You certainly chosen a centre of excellence there! One of the top five in the UK in my opinion!

Well, any knee replacement will take it out of you. Even a unicompartmental is still major surgery and needs time and commitment to physio to get over. In my job as an occupational health nurse, a few weeks ago I saw a man aged 50 who's had a uni and he was off a ful 12 weeks. I then arranged a phased return to work for him meaning wk1 2 4hr days, wk2 3 4hr days, wk3 2 8hr days and wk 4 3 8 hr days, then back to work full time. He said he just about coped with that. He is a finishing inspector in a factory so is not involved in hugely physical work.

There are quite a few people here who've had unis, hemis or partials - they go by all three titles - but I searched around the threads and found these threads that a refer to Partial in the title (but please do check before you post in them as some are quite old!)

Thanks for your reply. I will spend some time reading and pass the info onto hubby. Think he is worried about being away from work for so long and losing a grip on all his projects. Me, i would love to stay off work for that amount of time!! Am trying to convince him to loose some weight and get a bit fitter before op. although excerise is difficult with a dodgy knee.
Anyway off to do some reading...thanks again x

Well, come back and ask more if you want to.

dacw-
I have an 11-month-old uni-knee. I would be glad to answer any questions I can help you with. Feel free to PM me if you wish.

Please, ask the questions in here - we could do with a lot more information about unis.

dacw, I had a uni knee and was only in the hospital overnight. The surgery was on Friday and I went back to an office job for a few hours each day beginning the next Tuesday.

I might add that I'm still having issues but they are not related to my quick rehab.

Good luck.
