One for UK members (sorry US but we don't have such a useful forum as this!). Lidl has these for sale on Thursday 11 June. My OH says they are unisex.

Energising Knee-highs

  • Reduces lower leg swelling and relieves tired, heavy legs
  • Made from soft and light Supplex® fabric mix
  • With Lycra® for a perfect fit
  • With graduated compression from ankle to calf
  • Available in black, dark blue or anthracite
  • Sizes: 2½ - 5, 6 - 8 or 9 - 11
  • Price per pair £2.49

One thing though--my PT told me that you should not wear knee highs after knee surgery. Instead, you should wear a thigh high pair that also cover the knee.'

If you wear knee highs they can act as a tournequit and cause more swelling in your leg.

ExCUSE me? This IS a UK forum. And a Australian one. And a Canadian one. And a Spanish one. And anywhere else the members are located. Brian - this is why it's called the WORLD WIDE WEB!!! :hehe:

Gosh, that is not a bad price!

As for the knee-high issue, I was issued with knee high TEDs in hospital and they surely did act like tourniquets which is why I took them off on day 5 and never put them back on again despite the instructions to wear them for 6 weeks! Never did tell my surgeon! :hehe:

I believe you are referring to those torturous tourniquet socks!!! If they had to me that I had to where over the knee socks...they would have ordered them from the Zoo Supply store--"elephant support hose":rotfl:

They put the TEDS on me the second night...it left huge indentations and blisters on my lower leg...needless to say they never went on again!!!

Unfortunately, I am a very large woman...but my recovery has been good, but not nearly as great as yours. Congrats..you are blessed!

Given that there are only about 30 or so UK members I just felt a bit guilty! Lidl's things are good value though and my Targa computer is still going strong and will be 4 years old in September.

For US and other members, Lidl, and Aldi are German discount shops with special buys each week. They used to be frequented mainly by oldies, those hard-up and East Europeans but with the credit crunch this is no longer so. We have two Lidl shops and another being built.

We have Aldi shops here in Australia Brian..........haven't heard of Lidl. But you're right, the Aldi stores are getting VERY busy here in Brisbane with the state of the economy the way it is.

The knee high compression socks my doc prescribed are made by Activa and have a compression of 14-17 mmHg (British Standard Class 1).

By the way, what does TED stand for? I have Googled without success!

I also have Activa as I have extra large calfs (17") and have to have custom made ones.

We have Aldi in the US as well. Great stores for certain items! That's where I bought my cane back when I had my surgery. Sometimes I really do think our world is getting smaller and smaller.

Aren't Aldi and Lidl from the same root company? I shop in both quite often. They often have wizard tools and gadgets at knock-down prices!

Not sure, but in Germany I understand that either the Aldi or Lidl brother founders fell out and split so there are two separate companies - North and South.

Got them and wore them today. Quite pleased, they are not as strong as the medical ones but supportive enough. Had a 100 mile round trip drive my birthplace in Suffolk to have lunch beside the sea at Aldeburgh on what was a glorious summer day, but the TKR was aching when we returned to the traffic!

Hey Brian -- I LIKE Lidl!! They have some good stuff when they have it! We have one on the way from my friend's "chalupa" (old farm house) and we usually stop there to do grocery shopping and what not on the way back to Prague. I never thought of it as downscale; my goodness you should see the butcher part of the market in Vlasm where I shop. It's incredible!!!!
As for the knee high TEDS issue -- I was actually worried about that "tournequet" effect when I bought them for the flight from NYC to Prague (on Jo's and other's advice). I just didn't want to deal with the thigh high ones I had to wear for the 6 weeks after the operation. Actually the knee highs worked fine; I probably got ones that were too strong - middle weight - but I put them on on the plane, just pulling up my jeans and took them off when I got to the apartment. No swelling, no problems. I walked around the plane alot and did exercises every few hours....in the back. But I wouldn't want to wear them every day!!! I bought them in a surgical supply pharmacy which just opened near my house so I was fortunate I didn't have to hunt for them.

Hi, enjoy yourself in Prague! I think the discount stores are more popular on the Continent and some Brits are snobs, tending to look down on them but more and more people are using the likes of Lidl and Aldi in the UK. I must say it almost seems you are in Eastern Europe when we're in Lidl, with all the different languages!

I gave up wearing my TED socks after four weeks when we had some summer weather, and it was too hot to wear anything other than sandals on the feet. The ones I was issued with by the NHS hospital were knee-high only - no choice there.

We have an Aldi very near us, which is very good for certain things, and we have a Lidl a few miles away. The stuff they sell is much cheaper than Sainsburys or Tescos and good value. They also have all those weekly special offers which I like to check up on in case it's something I want.

We had a lovely holiday in Aldeburgh many years ago when the children were small - rented a holiday cottage with some friends, which was great fun. Is that where you were born, Brian? I was born in St Ives!

Back home already! We were expecting an update on your holiday in Norfolk!

I was born about 4 miles from Aldeburgh so we saw my brother (84) and eldest sister (86) yesterday after we had lunch at the White Lion (near the Moot Hall).

PS Just seen that you are near Leicester!
