I am told the I have osteoarthritis in my right shoulder and will need surgery. What type of surgery is used? I am confused between reverse shoulder surgery and regular (TSS)? total shoulder surgery. Is there a difference and which is one easier/ less invasive than the other?

@robtccharles Welcome to the shoulder side of BoneSmart! It's a bit smaller group but growing daily.

The type of surgery you will need totally depends on what is going on with that shoulder. Your surgeon will be the person making this decision.

There is no easier or less invasive procedure. But I have to say that most every member on this forum is glad they have had the surgery.

My colleague @djklaugh has some experience in this area. I've tagged her to come and chat with you.

@robtccharles Welcome to the shoulder section. As Jaycey said it will be up to your surgeon to decide which type of shoulder surgery is best for you. Generally speaking a standard replacement is done when the bones in the shoulder have deteriorated because of arthritis. A reverse replacement is done when there is damage to muscles and/or tendons + arthritis. Both of these are about the same in terms of being major and invasive surgery. Talk to your surgeon. If you have not yet found a shoulder surgeon do seek out one who specializes in doing shoulder surgery.

I think you will find that shoulder surgery is easier to manage and recuperate from that a knee replacement. Shoulder replacement of either type does require physical therapy for several months but at the end of that you should have pretty much full range of motion and good strength in the shoulder .... and be able to do most everything you need to do.

Thank you for both responses. You have answered both my questions. I am just starting my research and I feel I am still a few month’s away from any surgery. I am just 4 months out from my second TKR and really not that anxious for more surgery. Good to hear that shoulder surgery may be easier than knee surgery.
