hey there, i have to say my recovery is going great.
i have to force myself to use my walker. my hip feels better every day sometimes i have to remember i just had surgery. i love pt, its the only time insurance will ever pay for me to have a personal trainer and i plan to use it to the fullest. when i get out i feel like my right leg had a good work out the left reminds me of the pain. even when i stand it takes me a second but not because of pain because i like to make sure i'm standing straight . i'm not hunched like i was before surgery it dosent hurt to stand straight, ahhh what a beautiful thing. ok so here are my questions.
#1. my spinal failed the first time so i ended up with general. what is it supposed to feel like when the spinal is started. i had a shock in my right leg like someone just put the paddles (for cpr) on it. it made me jump. now i've had three epidurals one with each child and no problem so i really need to know should i have expected this? or was it just a problem with placement. i ask this because i'd like a spinal with the second hip if i can. on day 3 i had the worst headache of my life with nausea and vomiting. hurt worse then my hip, lol. when i laid flat it got better so i attributed it to a spinal headache. i'd like to hear others experience with it. if it was just placement i'll try it again, i'll just ask to be sitting when its placed.
#2. the os said the muscles were contracted around the capsule, i came out with 25 degrees external rotation i only went in with 5. so i'm pleased already but with the contracted muscles what is the chance of them stretching enough to give me a better rom. i'm talking about in time. i'm only 3 weeks tomorrow and dont expect it right away. i wonder for the future and willing to do the work.

anyhow. i'm loving life and doing more right now then i could before surgery. now i'm wanting to reach for the stars. its amazing how fast i've been able to graduate from wanting to get back to what i could do before to wanting to do more then i ever could. something about this joint feeling just like glass makes me think anything is possible. i love it. the right has to go next but believe me as it pops and clicks it reminds me why i did this and how greatful i am. oh i'm starting to lead with my right again going up steps that is so cool because the first week i didnt venture out because i had such a hard time with the steps. i was glad dh is 6'5" and could pretty much let me lean on him to get up them. no rail.

Hi Monique
When I got my spinal I was sitting up. The nurses held me forward. My IV line was kinked or I would have been in la la land. I remember feeling the needle and one nurse said oh it's kinked, she fixed it and I was gone. I'm just guessing as a lay person from your description that yours was not placed properly. Of course Jo will know.

As far as range. I never paid attention to any numbers with my hip. Just know that swimming got me an awesome range, better than the left hip, which is normal (???)
Yes, you are very very early in recovery

A spinal is actually different to an epidural. With a spinal, the needle needs to be in a spot that's only a mm from a nerve root so it's not at all uncommon for the nerve to be hit and yes, it does feel like an electric shock! It happened to me twice! But it's not serious and there is no lasting effect.

However, he must have got some of the stuff in, just not in the right place so though you didn't have the benefit of the spinal, you had the side effects which was rotten luck!

The muscles will regain length, vitality and flexibility as you go on. That's the great thing about muscles - mostly they are dynamic and will adapt.

Lucky you!

Monique, I am so thrilled to hear how well you're doing. Keep it up...you deserve this great new life!!

Hi Monique
I had a spinal and was completely awake and sitting over the edge of the trolley while they placed it. It was my second as I had one when I had my baby. Both worked fine, and as soon as they were scooting me round on the trolley again I could feel my legs going numb. I guess I was lucky as I didn't have any side effects. The nausea I did have I attributed to morphine and it stopped as soon as I stopped taking morphine.
My physio was hugely impressed with how up for everything I was the next day and I managed to walk out of my room and the length of another ward- on a walker to get there and I progressed to crutches for the return journey. She told the student she had that a spinal and minimum morphine was the way to go for a speedy recovery. But you had a speedy recovery anyway!! So maybe it is worth giving a spinal another go? Rotten luck for it not to work!

Hey M. Im not a hip Im a knee you know that, so I wouldn know but it sounds like you are doing great, dont do to much and you will be fine. It is great though huh, to do new things, well new to us who havent be able to do things for years, that we all want to go go . Be careful but keep up the good work. Love hearing the great stories....
