i anticipate having a total hip replacement in the near future. I have been diagnosed with medial pole osteoarthritis. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is. Thanks.

Hi @Craig1
Welcome to the hip side of Bonesmart.

@Josephine will be the best one to answer that.
I think that it is rarer and affects the outer bottom edge of the femur head...
So usually precludes resurfacing as an option.
I tagged Jo above but she is away from the forum for a few days. I'm sure she will be along at some point to educate us.
Hope all is well with your knees!

It's here - the central weight bearing point of the femoral head. Only this radiographer seems to indicate that it is slight towards the centre. This is the spot that most commonly marks the commencement of arthritic changes.

@Josephine thanks for providing the diagram. My knee specialist seems to think I need a hip replacement and has referred me to one of his colleagues who specialises in hips. I’m not sure I’m ready for this!

If you are struggling with hip pain ....the "cure" is amazing.
I'm sorry you have this in que but it is a Fix.

Thanks for your comments @Josephine and @Mojo333. My appointment with consultant is on 10 April so will see what he has to say. @Josephine is there any alternatives to THR at this stage?

Not really. If you already have osteoarthritis in the joint the damage will continue. Waiting will only impact other areas of your body as you try and stay off that sore hip. In my experience the longer the wait the more complicated the recovery. Best to get your THR done and get on with living!

Hip replacements last much longer now so at your age I would suggest you push forward so you can get at least 30 years out of it! May as well get your money's worth!!

In all seriousness, my point was even at 82, a person has a lot of living left to do. There is someone else on the forum with a mom who is 96 and facing a THR. My great-grandmother lived to 112 and my grandmother to 100. I find it tragic if people and/or surgeons think people are too late in life for a hip replacement. My mother's surgeon is refusing to replace her 15 year old knee saying she will have to live with it now. She is only 92 and last summer spent 6 weeks camping in her self converted van! Even if you are not that active, there are lovely walks, swimming, etc. to enjoy and people just deserve to live without chronic pain in today's world. Why ruin your last years by being sedentary and miserable? :happydance:
