Hi all, I had my right TKR done 8/18/21 (my left was done 7 years ago and is good) and was doing ok with recovery, today I got my leg caught in my pant leg and twisted it sideways so hard I saw stars! After, I immediately had swelling and shooting pain on the exterior of the knee up and down my leg, and I cannot bend it more than 20 degrees without excruciating pain. I can walk without pain or instability as long as I don’t bend it. I am icing and elevating, could this just be a soft tissue injury That I can just wait out?

:welome: to BoneSmart!

Sorry to hear you leg got twisted in your pant leg.
Could this just be a soft tissue injury
Most likely this is a soft tissue injury. Recommend you call your surgeon and let them know what happened to your knee. If you have increased pain and any difficulty walking you should see your surgeon for an examination.

I am icing and elevating
You will need to increase your icing and elevating while your knee recovers from the twisting in the pants.

That I can just wait out?
Let you surgeon know what happened.

I feel for you, I injured my knee at 6 weeks and in hindsight, wish I had seen my surgeon sooner. I overidid it in PT and ended up tearing tendons.
Let us know what your surgeon says.

Here is your copy of the Knee Recovery Guidelines, the articles are short and will not take long to read.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access these pages on the website

Thanks. I sent my surgeon a note. I am in more pain than right after surgery. But was hoping it might resolve itself. I have had a rough time thru this one.

I’m so sorry you hurt your leg. This recovery is tough enough without accidents like this! :console2:Keep us posted on how you’re doing.

Oh, drat, @Barbh1125! I think this is what we all worry could happen!

As @Jockette and @Pumpkin advised, I too, would call my surgeons office and get in to have it looked at. They can determine if it’s just soft tissue issues or more than that. I’ve seen here that these knee replacements are put in very well, so there isn’t so much likelihood for damage to the prosthesis itself. So, can you get someone to take you if you can drive due to the injury? I bet they will want to do an X-ray to check inside…

Let us know how you do and what you find out…and I’m so sorry!! I fell when my puppy tripped me at 11 weeks (the puppy, that is!) but I managed to revert to self-defense class moves and rolled onto my hip, so I was fine after a few days of rib pain from pulling wee muscles.

Please let us know what he says.
