Hello and Welcome to BoneSmart! I am sorry to read of your accident. It had to be frightening and especially so when you realized the extent of the injury. Thankfully you're now on your way to healing.

1 in 3 hip fracture patients die within in a year? OMG. Why? How do I reduce the risk of that happening?
I believe that is elderly people with other health conditions, not physically fit active 53 yr olds.
What should I be doing now (or not doing now) to speed healing and recovery?
Get adequate rest. It is not necessary to exercise your injured hip to promote healing. The trauma sustained through surgery will heal on its own. Often though, we're impatient and want to move the process along. In doing so we run the risk of struggling with pain and setbacks stalling the healing process. The best therapy for recovery is walking, but not to excess. Start slowly increasing time and distance incrementally in an effort not to overdo it. Give yourself the TLC you deserve and reap the benefits of a successful recovery.
Are there dietary supplements I should be taking?
Good Nutrition first.
I do take supplements and I took an Injury and Surgical Support Formula for one month post op. It was a months supply in two separate daily doses. I also drank Bone Broth. Magnesium may be helpful if you are struggling with muscle cramps or sleep.
Magnesium supports the following:
Bone health
Healthy blood sugar
Cardiovascular health
Muscle relaxation and nerves
Promotes healthy sleep (falling asleep and staying asleep)

As far as the length of time in the compressions socks, when you will be able to bear weight safely and whether you'll ever run again, I think your surgeon is likely the best one to answer these questions.

I wish you comfort as you're healing and peace of mind in allowing yourself the TLC you need and deserve right now. Thanks for joining us! I hope you'll continue to stop by and share progress. We'd love to cheer you on back to healthy and whole! :)

Please leave the exact date of your surgery and which hip was pinned so we're able to create a signature for you.
Thanks in advance!
