We will be going from Kansas to California by plane and then on a 1-week cruise starting on February 13th. I know to be prepared to prove to the airline security staff that I had surgery (show them the scar) and I fully expect to set off the alarms when we check in with Southwest Airlines. But I was wondering if anyone had taken a cruise with a new knee. As I remember from our cruise 3 years ago, the ship had some detectors you walk through also.....gad! Am I going to have to drop my drawers for everyone in the world for the rest of my life???? At least it will be warm on the ship and we'll have shorts on. But I was just wondering if anyone else had cruised with a (as CopperNob calls 'em) a Metal Mickey!

Jamie,
Patti just went on the wedding cruise in December. You should PM her--- even if she hasn't checked the board lately she would get the e-mail notification.

My PKR prosthesis didn't set off the detectors at any of the airports on our vacation last year. I was all prepared--- but didn't even have to flash my scar at anyone.

Great idea, Beach! I had forgotten about her cruising. I will email her! Thanks!!!

I had to fly from Seattle to Asheville, NC at almost 4 months after my LTKR...with transfers...and it set off EVERY detector! Most people were fairly nice about it and I purposefully wore capri-length pants so it was easy to prove (it was also August). I only had problems with one security person who wanted to touch, put her hands all the way around and squeeze--and I was hurting from the travel. I hit the roof on that one and refused to let her do that. Her supervisor came over, looked at the scar, and passed me through. Gads.

But even at almost 4 months, the flying was pretty tough, and being tall didn't help either (I'm 5-10). On some legs I got a bulkhead seat, and that helped a bit.

I didn't really enjoy flying before my TKR, and I think I enjoy it even less now!

Weezy

I'll be almost a year out when we go, so I'm not concerned about pain. But, gad Weezy....I'd freak if the security person wanted to squeeze my knee! I don't believe I'd stand for that either. What do they think....you'd have surgery and implant a bomb in there??? My word!!! I pretty well accept that I'll be the slow one at all airport checkins....it was really the ones on the cruise ship that I wondered about. I was hoping maybe someone had some experience with that. I emailed Pattipoo, but have not received a response yet. Thanks for providing your experience! It will help me be prepared for ANYTHING!!!

We went on an Alaskan cruise (Vancouver to Vancouver) at about 6 months. I got the impression (other than the original embarkation point where they were airline rigourous) at the shore stops the cruise ship people were more concerned with appearance of security than security. The security at shore stops was provided by onship staff whereas the Vancouver security was port of Vancouver personnel. At airports I set off everything, coming onto the ship I waltzed right through.

I think your biggest problem is how much weight you'll gain :-)

EDK....thanks so much for the information! That is what I was hoping. You know we don't usually gain weight on a cruise. We don't go for the food and somehow we don't really overindulge. Plus, we do so much walking between the port calls and just getting from point A to point B on the BIG ship, it all seems to work out. So I'm actually not too worried about that. Weight gain is much more dangerous when I'm cookin' up a storm for a holiday or party.....all that tasting!!! Thanks again!!!
