Had Tkr 2/12/08.they Say The Operation Went Well But My Concern Is The Swelling Of The Entire Leg . If I Had No Swelling I Think I Would Be Able To Move The Knee Better And Without So Much Pain . I Am At The Three Week Point And Would Like To Find Out If Anyone Is Having The Same Trouble That I Have.
Trouble Sleeping - Can't Find That Comfortable Spot.
Can Anyone Shed Some Light On This
Thanks
Tom

Whoa BABY can I jump in on this!!! I had massive swelling....over 14 lbs of fluid...NO KIDDING. (I tinkled myself into OBLIVION for days!! - sorry - you know I'll have to keep it REAL) The staples were hanging on for dear life! I have to admit, though, that the majority of that was out of my by the 3rd week, BUT, I was i the hospital with a dude that made my swelling look like nothing. He was so "tight" that he couldn't bend to 70. I have a pic of him....I'll post it.

anyway....my nurse kept check on me...she measured my calf everyday to make sure it was 'subsiding".....

OHHHHH...and it makes it hurt SOOOOOO bad...there's NO comfortable spot for that big fat monky jelly fish (new one!!)...My mom borrowed me a foam wedge to put under my knee and it elevated my "fish" even more. When I'd stand up and the fluid would feel like it running down my leg, I would almost pass out.

I feel for you, man.......wish I could make that booboo go away - POOF - but it'll be gone soon!

jellyfish....... Patti, have you got a book for this stuff or you just wing it?
Tom, it might help your swelling to do "ankle pumps"; I pretty sure ice will help also. For me, weeks 3-5 were the worst time, physically and mentally. Hang on it will get better. You are right about the swelling holding you back, ROM, pain, everything will get better as the swelling departs. Unfortunately, that 'train' doesn't run on a schedule. It will arrive sometime. Take your meds, use the ice, post often, pray lots, keep trying and wait.

guys...you'll have to excuse my poor typing today....I'm at work, sneaking onto the forum and I have to hurry and I make even LESS sense than normal!!

Big Fat Monkey Jelly Fish jumped into my brain....can't help those thingS!!

Tom13 I had the same swelling, I was also covered in bruising, as I suspect we all were. Hold in there it will get better!!

Patti, had the same incredible pain everytime I got up to the bathroom, which also was often. My doc wasn't sure he had heard about it before!! Anyway, did subside slightly daily.

Hi Tom..

We are very close in time... my tkr was 2/4 I am going into week 5... and I still have alot of swelling...I had bruises from ankle to hip and some nights my knee is the size of a basketball (hubbys description) my pain is better.. and my biggest problem with sleeping is.. I am a side sleeper cant get comfy that way so I like you had alot of probs getting comfy.. but now... I do ok....

pt is really hard for me... i only have 2 more weeks and now im concerned about should i get more???????

you are in the right place .. i just found these folks and it has made me feel so much better... I had not been getting any info from anybody about what to expect... or what to do..

Ice makes a huge difference for me...

Hang in there...

Hugs and Blessings.....

Tex, just caught your post, we have all decided that the docs are all more 'tight lipped' with info about TKRs than Barry Bonds is about steroids. By the time the docs tell you anything, you have already figured it out yourself.

You are at what I think was my toughest time. I couldn't sleep, hated taking the pills, was constipated, had hemorrhoids, couldn't drive, was bored, frustrated, hated the therapy, kept getting chills. But...........I kept checking in on this forum and found out I wasn't by myself and that I was normal....well as normal as I can get.
We have discussed all of the above topics and then some.
I am 6.5 weeks post op. Just keep working the leg and ice.ice.ice.
Keep it elevated and ice it. I probably ice mine 6-8 times a day at least.
Read some of our other posts about hot tub(or bath and bending it.
Sleep? Don't fight it. Just sit up, laugh, and sign on here and one of us will probably be up doing the same thing. It all gets better.
Holler and let us know how you're doing.
Doug

Tkr, Doug pretty much said it all. I am at 8 weeks, still icing it everyday, only about 2-3 times though now, back to work so don't have the time anymore.
Just get frozen veggies if you haven't already, I like the peas the best, get big cheap back, light weight and you can divide into zip locks. They freeze up quickly and I use them over and over. Of course ice packs are great too, but if you need extra peas work great and you can bend them around your knee. Good luck and check in here there are lots of people that "feel your pain"

I think I'm getting redundant - got nothing more to add here!

.

Do you know WHY, Ms. Jo????

Because you've taught us SOOOOOOOOOO well!!!

We never get tired of hearing what you have to say, though, we're like kindergartener's...we need to hear it over and over until it's pounded into Gatiger's thick skull. hee hee

(what smiley website do you use? I used to use smileycentral and it was notorious for viruses....maybe they've cleaned that up, though)

I have my own private collection of smileys on Photobucket. To date I have nearly 300!! If I see one on someone else's post that I like, I nick it and upload it to PB.

Patti wants to be all cute and stuff with her little font colors, always pickin'. Why you pickin' Patti? Josephine, don't give her any smileys.
