I am going to have both knees replaced in December 08, at the same time and I would like any information you can provide.

I hope that is not to strtaight forward, everyone here has been through the same thing I have to come to this point, so I wanted to spare you the drivel.

Welcomeand start reading, plenty of good info in these posts. I too am a 2 fer. There are a few of us Bi-lats here, and we all "get it" wether we had one or 2 knees done. And fair warning, we talk about alot more than our knees, that's just what brought us all here.

Max, I think one of the most valuable things you can do between now and December is to join a gym and strengthen your whole body.. I know your knees are shot but since they're going to be replaced, it can't get any worse.
You need to do seated dips and triceps presses so you can push up our of a chair with arms. Especially since you are going to have both replaced.
The stronger you get the legs, the better it will be post op. Do stationary bike and do intervals with the resistance.
You've got plenty of time to turn into Superman between now and December.

There is a ton of other information we can work on between now and then.

These guys all know far more than me to tell you, so I'll leave them to it!

Other than to say welcome to the forum. Nice you have you aboard.

Hey, Max, I had both knees done on May 13. Wouldn't have done it any other way, only thing that made sense for me. What Doug tells you is good advice. Also, I think one of the things that helped me get strong fast was getting back into the mainstream of my life on about the third day home. Now I realize you are most likely a guy and I am not, so me getting back into my life is probably quite a bit different that you getting back into yours. One of my motivating factors was a hungry husband and one who is used to being waited on when he is home. I get up at 2:30 am and get his lunch ready and fix him breakfast in bed, so you can see he is spoiled but in his defence he is equally good to me. I life taking care of my house and doing things for my family which consists of six dogs, one of whom was rescued and brought home the day after my surgery. I took over their care pretty much by the end of the first week. Between that and laundry and doing exercises, icing and elevating and resting I had a full schedule. I am almost six weeks post surgery now and pretty much back into my life as it was prior to knees going out two years ago. I still have some pain, especially at night but it isn't anything overwhelming and let's face it, you are going to have some pain regardless. It is just so much different that it was before the surgery and it is so wonderful to feel I have a life again. You are definitely joining a good club and this forum is the best thing you can do for yourself. I have said it so many times, were it not for the support and information provided on this forum I would have driven my OS and his staff crazy calling for info. Good luck, you are already half way there, you found this forum. Rowdy

Hey===glad to meet ya. I had a bilateral TKR done in November---that is the way to go, if you can handle it and ou rMD lets you---if you are going through rehab, why do it twice when you can get it all overwith? IT was onerous and very challenging, but I am almost back to 100% now. Not having a good knee to depend on kinds stinks at first, but you will be up to the challenge.

As others have said, stregthen your quads, your hammies, you glutes, and your calves as much as you can. ALSO---since you will not have a good leg to stand on (pardon my pun) you need to build up your upper-body as much as you can---trust me; you will be using your pecs, your triceps and your deltoids greatly to get up and around.

Warning--regardless of how strong you get, you will be amazed to see how quickly your muscles atrophy becasue of low use. The surgery is the easy part; then comes the in-home PT, and the fun is next outpatient PT---the harder you work, the more rewards you will reap.

Be prepared to ride a physical and emotional rollercoaster---you will have some good days, some great days, and some days that are rotten. Roll with the punches, as they say, and do not look short term---look as far as you can down the road. You will win the battle as well as the war.

Max, I did one and will have to do the other sometime in the future. I could not have done it your way. We are all different. I have worked out my entire life. Two days before going in for a right TKR as an emergency I did something to my shoulder. The pain rivaled the knee. [ My shoulder is completely messed up and not from that instance ] I also have bad spinal stenosis. Two knees would have killed me. I am strong and brave but it just wasn't for me even in retropspect.

I was walking perfectly just about immediately. I never saw a double TKR doing that and it meant a lot to me to be able to do that. I see your point of view but it's not for everyone. Had you gotten an infection, both knees would have had to come out. And infection is a real problem although none of us on this site have had one.

I am sooo happy for you and the others who have gone that route.......It's just not for everyone.

Rowdy66....My hat's off to ya! Really! You are amazing. I work full time, have two big dogs. I have house cleaners sometimes who are pretty horrible, now I have none. I cook, clean, take care of the house inside and out and have a second house to also take care of. My husband tries to help but let's say that his housekeeping skills are not a plus. I have old parents, young grandchildren and I'm being pulled all over the place. But you certainly take the cake. All those dependents and a new one to boot! With a 2TKR. Yup, my hat's off to you.

Weezy, We Are So Similar In That I Too Have Stenosis, Really Bad In My Cervical Spine, And I Hurt My Shoulder About A Month Before The Surgery On My Knees. Still Having Problems There But Getting Better And I Mean It Better Stay Better As I Have No Intention Of Having Anymore Surgeries For A Good Long While If I Can Help It. My Fear Of Surgery Is What Got Me Through The Bilateral On The Knees. As For Me Taking The Cake, I Do Not Have Older Parents, No Parents At All And My Husband's Parents Speak Little English And Have Littler Use For Their In-laws, I, Also, Have No Grandchildren In The Area And No Second House To Clean, The First Is Enough. As For Dogs, We Are Fond Of Saying We Are All Dogged Up Or If We Lose One To Old Age As Happens Every Few Years Then We Are Fond Of Saying We Have A Vacancy. At One Time About Five Years Ago We Had Eight Dogs, Six Of Whom Were Rotties That Weighed In At Over A Hundred Pounds Each And Were All House Dogs. The Care Of The Dogs Falls To Me And When My Hubby Is Home Him As We Are Overly Protective Of Even The Tone Of Voice Others Who Are Less Patient Sometimes Use When Dealing With Them. In Other Words We Are Crazy When It Comes To The Dogs. Lol I Am Doing Well Though And Did Not Have A Difficult Time Particularly After The First Week. I Never Felt I Didn't Have A Leg To Stand On So I Am Different There I Suppose, Maybe Just Stupid. I Iced It Seemed Almost Constantly And Am Back To That Regime As It Takes The Soreness Out Of My Tendency To Overdo. I Am Thrilled To Be Back To Walking Normally. One Thing I Have Found Is That When I Have Leg Pain, Especially At Night, If I Get Up And Move Around If Only For Just Few Minutes It Eases Up And I Can Go Back To Sleep For A Couple Of Hours. Being Able To Sleep On My Side After Years Of Only Sleeping On My Back Is Really Heavenly. Only Problem Particularly With The Leg That Had The Tibia Fracure Is It Gets To Hurting Much Sooner Than The Other One When I Lay On It. The Body Pillow Is A Real Must And I Thank Whoever Wrote About It First As Is The Cream, Forget The Name, My Os Had Sample Tubes And I Will Be Able To Get Some When I Go To My Primary Care Physician. I Am Finding That I Can Even Cut My Pain Meds Down After Years Of Being On A Really High Dosage And Am Not Now Even Taking Mucsle Relaxers After Decades Of Relying On Them. I Am Really Happy I Had The Surgery And Only Would Encourage Anyone Thinkng Of Ir To Consider In Favor As The Outcome For Me Has Been So Spectacular. Have A Little Dog Or Two In My Face So Must Go, Can't See The Screen. Rowdy

Max,
I just got home yesterday from having bilats done and I'm not regretting it. You have been given some good advice so far about getting strong before surgery. I had access to a gym at work, but my knees were hurting too darned bad to walk there! So, I worked on them for a couple of months in a pool by kicking with kickboard and general water aerobics. I also did LOTS of leg lifts while sitting in a chair to strengthen quads. I have a bowflex at home so was also working on upper body strength. Well, it paid off because the nurses were amazed, especially when I lifted right up to (ahem) have them pull out the bed pan (yes, that's what you'll have to look forward to at hospital). Best of luck to you. I am in probably the most difficult period right now and am still not regretting it. If you have good mental strength and physical stamina, you will fly through it. Funny thing, while I'm lying still in bed, it hurts much less now than before TKR. Now walking is another story, but it a story that will have a happy ending soon! God bless and keep posting. This is my first post "on the other side". Yeah!!!!!

Ah, turtlelady - welcome home! You sound like you did good. I am very pleased for you.

Welcome back Tutlelady (Sharon), I had thought of calling you again but thought it best to wait until you were ready to pull your head out of your shell! Ha! You sound much better. What I want to know.... Are you randomly falling asleep like I was last week?

Sharon, I'm glad you are back! You weren't sounding too good in the hospital the other day. It's only going to get better from here...... Karen
