I am new to this forum & have my TKR scheduled for 3/16/09. I am overweight but my OS said I am still a good candidate for KR. Is there anyone out there who is 75 lbs overweight and has had KR?

Welcome to BoneSmart, Lori - you joined us not a moment too soon! I'm also having a TKR next week and I suppose I am about 125lbs overweight!

I have nursed an awful lot of people who have been 100-200lbs overweight and they did just fine. One dear lady was 215lbs overweight!

Is there a particular reason you are concerned about this?

Lori I'm between 60 and 75 lbs overweight and had a LTKR on Feb 18th, so about three weeks ago. I have had no weight related problems and my OS had me walking the day after surgery with full weight bearing on my left leg.

I would imagine the thinner you are the easier it would be for your muscles to recover and it would likely be easier on the artificial joint.

I would love to lose the extra weight but realistically I can't promise that will ever happen but one thing I'm sure of - it will be a lot easier to exercise and lose weight with two good legs!!

You don't have to live with the pain and restrictions you probably have now so go for it!!

Best of luck

Diane

Hi Lori and welcome. I am 60lbs overweight and had my TKR done in January 2008. Yes it would ideal if we were all fit and slimmer but my surgeon has never once stipulated that I should lose weight, though when I tell him I am dieting he always tells me it is a great idea as for each lb you lose it helps reduce the amount of pressure to your knee?? Oh sorry I have forgotten what he says, damn memory!! Jo will probably help me out here?

I am at my heaviest ever right now so my hubby and I are committed to a new diet, well healthier eating plan. We are visiting family and friends (including Jo) in April all being well and I don't have many clothes I fit into at the moment, so I have to make it work this time. I am also having problems with my un operated knee and my back so I am doing this.

After my RTKR I lost about 15-20lbs, the narcotics deminished my apetite. Everyone said I looked great. However when I weaned myself off them in August (took 4 months) I seemed to need to eat instead, especially chocolate!! Guess it's like smokers who give up.

Anyway, don't worry for now, concentrate on getting ready for your life changing surgery, it's wonderful not having pain in my right knee anymore!! Good luck on the 16th. Sue

Welcome, LoriW.....I am about 75 pounds overweight and had successful right knee surgery (replacement) about a year ago. Many of our forum members have weight and other health issues that have not been a problem when having replacements. Please post any specific questions or concerns you might have and I'm betting someone here will have been through the exact same thing! Good luck to you!

LoriW.

I had BI-TKR on 11-13-08 and at the time I was about 100# over ideal. The DR. did not harp on this but did mention that the less I weigh the longer the bearing will last. i am 14 weeks post op and experienced no problem due to my weight. Without the constant pain keeping me sedate I have managed to loose about 30# since the surgery.

Best of luck!

Max

Thank you all for your replies. My OS surgeon is wonderful & encouraging. I've lost 25 lbs since I knew for sure I'd be having TKR. My only big concern was blood clots -- I guess thinking the higher the weight, the greater chance for that.
Thank you for your reassurances and shared stories -- they have helped tremendously, as I have been fairly anxious about this surgery.

That happens to us all, Lori! My BP was UP this morning!

The funny thing is, I think some of us who are overweight got that way because of our gradually decreasing abilities to be active because of pain. I was probably about 80 lbs. overweight for my first TKR last April, and I was surprised that by about August I was losing weight without really working at it. My activity level had naturally increased as my knee healed. Unfortunately, my right knee went completely boo-boo by November and I put some pounds back on.

I haven't really gotten back to a good activity level after my RTKR yet, but I know its coming and as I can bike and walk without pain, I'm pretty sure my weight will naturally go down again.

i am 130 pounds overweight. My tkr was 11-3-08. no problems so far..... I feel 200% better than before my surg.

There is no doubt in my mind that my leg problems are why I am 60lbs. overweight. Before the traumatic amputation of my right leg BK I was in great shape at 200lbs, where I had been most of my life. Now, since 2000, with rbka and recovering from my 2nd LTKR my activity level is and has been greatly diminished. Hopefully when this knee is ready I can at least begin walking again. I intend to get back to Alpine skiing, but that may take a while.

Well spring is coming, then summer, then fall.....& winter! You should be ready in plenty of time
TC! Great attitude! :)

Hi Lori,

You have picked a great place to ask questions. It has helped me a lot just to read the posts. I was also given a great deal of encouragement before my LTKR. The surgery was on Feb. 12 and I am also about 130 lbs overweight. I have a burised something that caused me a little compllication but that has nothing to do with my weight. I think I have done pretty well. I was scared to death before the surgery. I think that is natural. I can say that now because I'm on the other side. (At least for this knee. Still have another to go.) My best suggestion is to prepare as best as you can and pray. Have confidence in your Dr. but ask all the questions you want to, and make sure he answers.
