Hi, I had my knee done 9/2. The nerve block did not work for me, so I ended up spending an extra day at the hospital getting my pain under control. I was released on the 4th, and have been recuperating at my sister’s. I think I’m doing pretty well, I am able to extend my leg and on Friday I reached 90 degree flexion.
So far I’m looking forward to being able to walk unaided.
Prior to this replacement I had two arthroscopic Surgeries for torn meniscus on the same knee, the first was 9/15/2011, the second 8/5/2013.

She’s recuperating at my place for the first couple of weeks! We’re sisters!

@Lbcoyote Which knee was operated on? That way we can make a signature for you so we can advise you correctly.

Its nice to have a sister to recuperate with. Your ROM is very good for where you are in your recovery. I will give you your own set of recovery articles in my next post below.

And here is your very own copy of our knee recovery articles:

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now; they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

My left knee.

Prior to this replacement I had two arthroscopic Surgeries for torn meniscus on the same knee, the first was 9/15/2011, the second 8/5/2013.

My home PT visit went well, I graduated to a cane, and flexion at 100 degrees.

I scared my sister today. I didn’t mean to. I went to my 2 week post op appointment where the extreme bruising and tenderness were noted. Out of an abundance of caution they sent me for an ultrasound to make sure there wasn’t a blood clot.
My sister didn’t get to hear the whole story, and rushed to make sure I’m okay. I am okay.
No blood clots, great healing so far, the incision looks great, I’ve got really good ROM (eyeballing it today the doc thinks around 110 degrees flexion).

I’m very happy I got this done, I am anticipating many adventures with my new knee.

And Amynewleftknee, I’m sorry I scared you. You are the best big sister ever, and thank you for taking care of me.

I’m glad that you had the ultrasound so you don’t have to worry about a possible blood clot. Your ROM is very good for 2 weeks.

How wonderful to have a sister to share recovery with. Having an ultrasound to make sure no issues must have been very reassuring to both of you. Have a peaceful night. Keep healing - adventures await.

Last night was rough, a lot of pain from my left hip to my left calf. Cannot get comfortable, so sleep is an issue. My leg gets so stiff, and I know this is temporary but it’s frustrating too.

Sleep is something that haunts many of us in recovery. Are you continuing to ice at night? I iced pretty much non stop except for when walking and it really helped with the swelling and pain. Also, I set my alarm and took my pain medication on a schedule round the clock. I kept something to drink nearby and some crackers so I had something in my stomach so the pain meds would not upset my stomach. Between the ice and pain medication I was fairly comfortable even when I could not sleep. I used my recliner often and would watch silly television shows and drift off here and there. Also naps during the day are a wonderful and needed thing to help with healing and recovery.
