Having a revision of a right TKR November 5, 2018.

Been having issues with original replacement from the beginning. I kept telling surgeon was not feeling right. It will be 4 years this coming January. Surgeon kept giving me reasons (excuses) on why I was having issues. None of them panned out. One excuse was that he thought I have RA and that is why my knee was hurting. He told me to see a rheumatologist. RA Dr told me I don't have RA and to seek another opinion.

I went to a knee joint specialist and he told my my knee was not stabilized properly, said "it was very jiggly" . So I am having it done. I am 63 and very active so don't want to slow down. Walking seems to aggravate it the most.

My reason for going back to this forum is to see if any one else had these issues . Also concern about recovery. This doctor does not cut the quadriceps so I am hoping that will help in PT and recovery. Any advise and experiences are much appreciated. My first surgery was surgery from hell, and I have had many. Thank you in advance!

Hi - you were a member before? What was your username then? I can merge your two accounts so the rest of your story can be accessed.

I think you need to be prepared to have to slow down for your recovery and I'm quite sure you'd have been told that before!

Also no surgeon cuts the quads any more - very old fashioned. But we do still have members worrying about it.

We have loads of articles now about recovery - I'll leave them here for you to do some prep!

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Josephine, my username last time and still Donnarut. Thank you

I am a little anxious. The last time I went to a rehab center for about 2 weeks- I have a 2 story house. This time this surgeon advises his patients go home from the hospital, states he feels they do better, and told me that he feels every time you subject yourself to another facility you open yourself to infection. He did tell me if I really want to go to a rehab center he will send me. I opt to go home. Hope I made the right decision. Not sure what to expect- if this is going to be better or worse. The first surgeon did cut the muscle, this one does not. So I am hoping that recovery will be better.

@donnarut, did you post about your previous TKR? I can't find any previous posts by Donnarut or donnarut.
Did you have to register again this time?
Please can you give us any further information, so we can merge your accounts?

Don't fret about going home. It really is the best place for you

Don't remember if I posted last time. I think I did though. And I didnot have to register. Still was getting emails. My first knee replacement was Jan 2015.

Donnarut or donnarut would both show the same account - this one. You must have used either a different username or email address

Good luck tomorrow. I agree-home is the best place as soon as you are ready. I recently had a revision for reasons that sound similar to your issues. You're welcome to read my thread as you are able.

@donnarut .... we removed the email address you posted since it's not a good idea to have your email on a public forum. That is the email that is associated with this BoneSmart account. So if you had another account at some time, it must have been under a different username and an email address other than this one. Several of our staff members have searched for an old account for you and we cannot find it.

Donna, I have a similar story. My first TKA was a nightmare. I got a second opinion and was told I had excess laxity, they could re-do it or I could live with it using a brace. I did the latter. Then this year I started to have a lot of pain after vigorous exercise. Turns out both the femoral and tibial components are loose. So I'm having a do-over in about 3 months.
