I have very little fear of surgery and a high tolerance for pain, Ive unfortunatly experienced much trama in my life while in the USN and working in heavy manufacturing in my lifetime. I enjoyed the comrade here and look forward to a new knee and comparing notes.

thread at the top of the Knee Replacement Pre-Op Area page and you'll be added to the list.
It's a good idea to get to know your fellow BoneSmarties who will be getting new joints this month. We've found that it helps to have a group of folks who are going through surgery and do it as a team....helping and supporting each other.

Hi @Kastun and welcome to BoneSmart! We've all been down this road and look forward to supporting you in this surgery. :)

Make sure you have ice - lots and lots and lots of ice. I've cleaned out my freezer so we'll have plenty of space for it.

Thanks for the info,I'll be in Pittsburgh, PA on the 28th n getting cut on the 29th.

Thanks for your service! Good luck with your surgery.

Hey all,I'm home n definitely underestimated the amount of pain I would experience Friday afternoon was my surgery Sat morning I was on my feet walking down the hall after my first therapy session to attempt a stair climb. I experienced nausea and lightheadedness and failed to climb 1 step. After some bed rest and therapy I was able to accomplish this that evening. All in all I'm improving daily and sleeping good at night. I'm about to start 2 weeks of in home therapy. It sucks but if I wanna have a successful outcome I've gotta put in the work. Thanks all for your concern.

Welcome to the other side Kastun. The first 2 weeks can be difficult as the knee is swollen and you cannot :ice:do what you used to do. Ice and elevate and work with your knee. Read the articles here and know that we all are walking the walk too.

Guard your knee and don’t let anyone grab it or try to move it without your permission.

I'm now on day 9 and the first 5 were hell. The swelling has gone down for the most part and I can walk w a cane. Most of the pain when I walk is from the bruising in my thigh. My knee won't lock out due to stiffness but I feel every day I see improvement . I've read many horror stories n not sure I would go thru this again,I'm a long ways from home.

Things should get better from now on, @Kastun .

Make sure you rest, ice, elevate and take your medications on time. You only need a little, gentle exercise at this early stage, so don't overdo your activity. With this regime, your pain should settle down to a more acceptable level.

@Kastun ,
Since you've now had your TKR, I have moved your thread to the Knee Replacement Recovery Area.

Here is the post-op reading we give to everyone:
Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now; they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. Here is a week-by-week guide for Activity progression for TKRs

The Recovery articles:
The importance of managing pain after a TKR and the pain chart
Swollen and stiff knee: what causes it?

Energy drain for TKRs
Elevation is the key

Ice to control pain and swelling
Heel slides and how to do them properly

Chart representation of TKR recovery
Healing: how long does it take?

Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

There are also some cautionary articles here
Myth busting: no pain, no gain
Myth busting: the "window of opportunity" in TKR
Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds

Please don't be overwhelmed by the list. The articles are not long and they and contain information that will answer many questions and help you make your recovery much easier on your knee and on you.

We are here to help in any way we can: answering questions and concerns; supporting and encouraging you from start to finish.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.
