TKR Tkr may 28th

Evening all.

I'm 12 wks post op on Tuesday 20th August.

Swelling has gone down now. Im walking daily.

Only I can hear a clicking noise in me knee when I walk. Is this normal? No pain when I walk.

Enjoying swimming most days. Went shopping at weekend only 3 shops and food shopping. My knee was sore and swollen on return. It was very warm at the weekend don't know if this made it worse.

I feel so lucky in that my ortho team kept reminding me preop to expect clicking!:heehee:

My left knee clicks so steadily like a metronome I told them they should have just installed a step counter.

Sometimes the clicking goes away as the implant settles, sometimes... they just keep time!

Yeh, that amount of shopping would have been overdoing it for me at 12 weeks!!! I hope you're continuing to ice and elevate a few x daily.

Hi there thanks for the reply. That's good to know about the clicking.

Yes I have been elevating and icing since the shopping. You forget when your doing things. Till tou get home and your knee is stiff and sore. I go away end of September to cornwall. I hope I can do a bit more then. But if not will still have a good time!!

Many thanks

Nicky

I agree with @mendogal about clicking.
Painless clicks are common.
Mine only clicks occasionally- if I step backwards from the bathroom mirror for example.

Hi @millwhop! I'm another one who has a "clicking" knee -- actually two of them.

Like you, I was worried when it happened with my first TKR. But my surgeon said it would likely decrease or disappear with time. Sure enough, the older TKR (September 2021) is barely there. The newer of the two (done last December) is still pretty loud.

As long as there is no pain associated with the clicking, it's not something to worry about.

Happy Three Month Anniversary!
I hope you're enjoying the Summer. A great rest of the week to you!

Hello there.
Can't believe it's been 3mnths already. It's flown by. Have completly stopped using my crutches now when walking. Swimming half a mile at least 5 times a week and trying g to up my walking now. The last w days have done 2 mile walks as well. All going well. (Didn't think I would ever say that again).

Just slow will the quickness come eventually ?? I hope so?

Hope you have a good week..

Nicky

Happy 3 month an-knee-versary, @millwhop! Sound like you are doing really well, swimming 5 times a week and walking 2 miles at this stage!

As long as there is no pain, just keep doing what you are doing -- gradually increasing the distance and you will continue to see progress. Improvements do come a bit more slowly after the first three months, but many of us continue to make gains into our second year.

Glad to read that you are getting back to life!

The weeks do seem to go clicking on by, once you get past the first few.
Your doing great with the walking and swimming and can expect even more progress since you're only three months post op. Thanks for the update. Enjoy the rest of the week, Nicky!

Evening.
I'm 4mnths this Friday. Things seem to have slowed down with my achievements. I'm doing more each day, but I have to ice and elevate at night. Some nights I sleep well for more than 3hrs others I really struggle. I only have 2 cocodamal 30/500 before bed now.

I'm going back to work onthe 16th October...im hoping I will be alright I have got to see occy health the week before to see what they can do to make it easier.

I've got a question. When I'm walking I'm not very fast, does the speed come back on its own in time?

Going away on Friday for the week down to Cornwall in the UK. Can't wait. Thank you for all your good advice along my way.

Nicky

At four months, even at six, the need to ice and elevate doesn't go away.

If there's nighttime pain and swelling, it's your body's only way to tell you that you're overworking your new knee.

What worked for me was immediately reducing my activity/exercise, either by time or by distance, by about a third.

After a few days, if things are better, increase by no more than 10% every few days.

I was still pretty slow at 4 months post op. As time went on I got faster. I don’t remember how far post op I was when one day I was walking from the car into Walmart and I realized I was walking faster and I thought to myself, “look at me, walking like a normal person!” :heehee:

Omv that's brilliant to hear. My partner keeps saying I must push myself to go faster but I said I can't. It's good to hear it just happened for you.

It's strange aint it as you dont think you will ever walk normal again lol x

Hi there

There's no pain. Just aches more sometimes. I will try reducing a bit tj see if that helps
Thanks for the reply!!!

I was still walking slow at 6-7 months after my first TKR. I had to really focus on walking heel to toe, and that slowed me down considerably. I also had the clicking up to 8-9 months post-op too. I felt like a lot of change/improvement happened up to 4-5 months after the surgery, then the next 6-7 months was one slow improvement after another. By the time I got to 10-11 months, I had mostly returned to normal life and stopped thinking about my knee so much, and THAT'S when I noticed how much things had improved. I still say I was one of the slower recoveries though, and unfortunately that's ALWAYS been my body.

It's the little things that can help or drive us nuts. I used to analyze everything!!! I can't wait for the day you will just notice things are much better and more normal.
