I'm 6wks post op. Been doing my exercises the physio gave me. Since Friday my knee has been hurting and a lump has appeared on my knee. Any ideas no issues up till Friday!

Hi and Welcome!

I sometimes had a lump appear, in the early weeks, especially after PT, and in my case it was swelling, due to a new, or too many, exercises. What exercises are you doing, and have you increased any?

Please tell us the date of your surgery and which knee it is and we’ll make a signature for you.

I will leave you our Recovery Guidelines. Each article is short but very informative. Following these guidelines will help you have a less painful recovery.

Just keep in mind all people are different, as are the approaches to this recovery and rehab. The key is, “Find what works for you.“ Your doctors, PTs and BoneSmart are available to help, but you are the final judge as to the recovery approach you choose.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines

1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary

2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
If you want to use something to help heal the incision,
BoneSmart recommends hypochlorous solution. Members in the US can purchase ACTIVE Antimicrobial Hydrogel through BoneSmart at a discount. Similar products should be available in the UK and other countries.

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access to these pages on the website

While members may create as many threads as they like in the majority of BoneSmart’s forums, we ask that each member have only One Recovery Thread. Hi thanks for the reply. I have been doing knee stretches on the stairs and also a sit down exercise bike. I had my right knee done on the 28th may. Tkr. X

Are you icing and elevating, @millwhop? If the lump is due to inflammation, that will help it resolve. Please read the article Jockette shared above on how to do it for most benefit.

Afternoon all.
This is my story so far. I had a tkr on 28th may 24. All went well. Stayed in hospital for 2nights first night was rough till they got the pain medication right. Struggled with me crutches no coordination lol.
When I came home had my first physio the week after was told that my staples was bomb proof and i wouldn't do any harm to the wound. Did some stretches and went back to his room. There was blood on my plaster coving the staples. Was told if it didn't stop to get it checked out. The next morning we had to go the hospital x2 to get it changes and again the next. Was told to rest and keep knee elevated and not to move. Stopped my blood thinners and to come back again kn the Tuesday. Thankfully it had stopped then and they took my staples out that day...ohhh did that hurt....
This is my scar 6wks post op.

I’m sorry you had some bleeding issues, is all well now? Sometimes they tell us to do exercises that are too aggressive for our stage of healing.

And getting those staples out, ouch! I had stitches, for which I am very thankful

By the way, I merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread, as we prefer that members in recovery have only one thread.

This benefits you because all your information is in one place, easy to find, and maintains a nice journal for you.

This also benefits our staff, as your information is all in one place, and we often go back through your thread for previous details, so we know what you‘ve been through which helps us advise you better.

So, please keep all your posts in this thread. If you’d like a new title, let us know what you want, and we’ll change it for you.

Many members bookmark their thread in their computer browser, so they can find it when they log on.
How can I find my threads and posts?

Best wishes on your continuing recovery!

I had 35 staples and 34 hurt! I'll ask for glue next time.

I'm so sorry you had aggressive PT that your knee wasn't ready for. Please don't do anything that hurts or harms your knee. It needs time to heal and not strengthen. Gentle PT allows healing with less inflammation.

Sorry your staples hurt removing, I had 36 staples also and had them removed at two weeks. While a couple of them stung a little bit most of them were pretty painless. Coming up to 11 weeks I can barely see the staple punctures.

Sad to see you were off to a rough start with the bleeding. Glad it’s resolved!
Hopefully at six weeks post op, you’re beginning to appreciate the gift of a new knee. Thanks for sharing an update with us, millwhop!
I hope you have a nice week!

Are you feeling stronger and slowly getting back to life? I hope so!
Please let us know when you have the time. Hope to hear from you soon!

Afternoon all.
Just a question. I has a spinal Anesthesia. The day after I had a smell I couldn't get rid off. Was told this was due to this. Any one else experience this?

Many thanks

Nicky:)

@millwhop. Is this still bothering you or is it something that went away in a day or two? Did you have sedation in addition to the spinal?

People react differently to different anesthetic agents used to sedate them. It is not uncommon for people to notice changes in taste and smell post-anesthesia.

Do you have any pain when you bend you knee? If so, where?

The smell went after about 2wks. Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

Don't get pain when bend me knee. Just throbs if I do too much on it. Eg. Bending f walking and exercise. Today I have been swimming again for 50 mins walking g in the pool and some swimming. I also did some step ups on the step I coukd tell I had worked it when I got out as I had a burning g sensation in my thigh. But went after some massage....

Hope this helps xxx

You are doing really well for just a bit over two months post-op, @millwhop! 50 minutes in the pool is a lot!

Listen to your body: If you get throbbing/burning/aching after a workout like you describe, be sure to scale it back for a few days to give your knee time to recover.

Remember that your bones and ligaments are still healing. You might find this chart helpful
