TKR and Rheumatoid arthritis

Are you sure the pain is due to a flare-up of your RA? Could it not be pain from your new knee? Seems more likely to me.

My knees are the only things that don't hurt. I have not had much pain in them but I was just wondering if RA affects the joint. I had BTKR on Sept. 23, 2008. Today I could barely do PT and couldn't finish due to pain in my ankle from the RA. The therapist stretched my knees and my ROM was pretty good. 119 on the left and 109 on the right. My knees were extremely bad before the surgery and my right one had actually a crevice in the bone from the wear. MY RA is bad and I take injections, Methotrexate, Celebres and Sulfazalazine for it.

I see - what occurs to me is that you might have adjustment problems from your knees getting accustomed to the new anatomy. If there was even a small a degree of deformity or malalignment as a result of the O/A, then as the muscles, ligaments and other bones and joints adapt to the new structuring, it can hurt! I think perhaps this might be your problem.

My legs had bowed to the inside causing me to be knock kneed. Maybe that is part of the problem but my hand and my feet have been hurting a lot due to the RA. Both knees were done eight weeks ago. They are so much better than before surgery. Even if my ROM doesn't get better I don't mind b/c they are so much better. I know they will get better though. my knees were so much worse than the xrays. I had worn a three inch crevice in the bone on my right legs due to the OA. I was wondering if the RA still affected the fluid and ligaments surrounding my new knees.

Doris, are you still on any pain meds for the BKR? Even though they are for the knees I imagine a dose of that would help with all the other joints to help you through PT.
