Good afternoon, I have a question 4 days ago I took a hard fall. I hit both knees and my head. The first TKA(R) knee was performed Sep 2019. The second TKA(L) knee Mar 2020. The (L) knee very swollen and very painful. When should I be concern to speak with my surgeon?

Hi and Welcome!

I think to be on the safe side I’d call your surgeon’s office to let them know you fell, and let then decide if they want to see you.

Please give us the exact surgery dates for both knees, and we’ll make a signature for you.

Here are our Recovery Guidelines we give to new members. Each article is short but very informative. Following these guidelines will help you have a less painful recovery.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access to these pages on the website

While members may create as many threads as they like in the majority of BoneSmart’s forums, we ask that each member have only One Recovery Thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review the member’s history before providing advice, so please post any updates or questions you have right here in this thread.

Thank you for your response. First surgery date 9 Sep 2019 and 10 Mar 2020.

Thank you fir those dates, you now have a signature.

Other than the fall, how is your recovery going?

The implants are very strong and it's very hard to damage them. More than likely your soft tissues are very angry, this has caused the increased swelling. I would definitely let your doctor know. He might want you to go in for X-rays to be on the safe side.

When I was less than a year out, I stepped in a hole, rolled my ankle, breaking it and two foot bones. But, I ended up falling directly on my new knee. It bruised, swelled, and hurt for a few weeks, but the implant was fine. Hopefully, yours are, too.
