Titanium Induce bursitis

Can anyone help me with info. I'm from NZ and logged on a while ago when i developed hip and groin pain from my post 8 year revision hip replacement. After numerous xrays scans etc which only showed up swelling on the inside thigh (groin) my specialist has sent me to the head of ortho in NZ Professor Horne who did the revision 8 years ago (loosening bottom shaft). He thinks i have a rare condition condition where the metal particles inflame the bursa around the hip. (ileopsoas i think is one). He says he has only come across two cases in NZ before. Treatment seems difficult. Am to have a MRI scan soon i hope to confirm or not. But would like info from anyone who has had this (symptoms and treatment) so i can be more informed on what will happen if this turns out to be the case. Am at my wits end with the pain in the groin and outer hip and down the shaft. CAT scan showed no loosening.

What kind of prosthesis do you have, Sarah? It's metal on metal, I take it?

I've only heard of one case like this before (a millenia ago!) and in that the patient had an actual cystic lesion which was full of fluid and metal particles from the worn cup. It was an inflammatory process caused by the particles, as you said.

I'm not awfully sure if you'll find anyone who's had that happen to them here. Not yet, anyway.

Hi Josephine Yes i think metal on metal, never aksed. The revision was done 8 years ago by the head of ortho in NZ. He is the one who suspects this problem. I hope it isn;t as he says it is very hard to treat successfully.
Am having a mri so hopefully it will help. He said he can feel a swelling in the groin and i also have impaired feeling in lower left leg. This is the hip replacement leg. Plus i now notice that often my legs rub together in inner thigh. I am a thin no slim tall woman of 48 and have not had this problem before so feel it is swelling.

I would like to know more also. I am 3 months out and I have the same issues. I have a lot of pain and swelling on the outside of my hip over the greater trochanter that goes down my thigh and groin pain that feels like a pulled muscle. I see my dr on Aug 1st and was going to ask him to inject some cortisone in the bursa because I was suspecting bursitis. I am a very thin person so this swelling is very noticable on me if I am wearing tight pants. My implant is titanium and polyurethane.
