THR TiredOfLimping's Left THR Recovery

Great to read of the loving care you received from family and good news that the bruising and swelling seem to be dissipating. Congrats on the new grandson on the way. Exciting times!
Best wishes for your follow up visit on Tuesday, let us know how it goes if you don't mind sharing.
Happy Sunday! :)
@TiredOfLimping

Thank you all for the caring support!

I think I have reached a milestone! I had a great night's sleep and woke feeling good this morning!

The bruising is getting better and swelling was down even more. Pain was greatly reduced. And my appetite was back. So today I spent the day walking from the bed to the kitchen all day long, with my cane until around 4pm when I switched back to my walker.

My friend cooked some dinner and another couple of friends came over. We ate and I was even able to play 1 game of Mexican Train dominos. I enjoyed it all very much. I am now icing my hop with my feet elevated.

Today I felt much better physically and mentally!

Not only do we have surgery dates within a month of each other, both our daughters are expecting babies within a month of each other. Congrats to us!! I think I’m worrying more about being a grandma vs hip recovery!!

We are like twinsies! Haha is this your first granbaby? So exciting isn't it!?!

I have 4 grandchildren that are my oldest son's children. A 15 yr old granddaughter, and 3 grandsons ages 4 1/2, and twin 1 year olds. So this little boy will be getting a lot of hand me downs from the twins.

I'm going to need a bigger vehicle. My 2 door coupe is too small for the car seats now. Haha

Today was my 2 week followup at my OS's office. The PA removed the 2 stitches, one at the top and one at the bottom of the incision. He looked at everything and noted the bruising is diminishing and the swelling isn't a hematoma. He said the incision looks good. I can now go without a bandage.

I made the appointment for the next followup in a month. That will be my 6 week mark. I also had to make a separate appt for a different day for my 6 month followup for my right hip. Insurance complains about 2 appointments on the same day. Annoyed me somewhat but I was just so glad to be out and around people I just laughed.

After the dr office, my friend and I had lunch. I was walking with my cane and even though I am slow, I'm walking without a limp. Got home and took a nap.

Hi there and greetings from the UK. My op was on the 9th August so very near to your dates. This my 2nd hip op and very different to the first. My first op was similar to yours and my hip leg refused to cooperate with anything!
This time round has been better but I have a lot of bruising. My suture is not coming out until after our bank holiday so almost another week. The extra tape protecting the wound is really itchy and horrible too and I am getting it looked at today at our local
Practice…the extra tape was out there to stop water ingress but since coming home, and having an overhead shower I am strip washing and doing my hair in a bucket. A far cry from the pampering in the recovery home I left on Sunday with assisted showers and hair washed in a salon on sone days! But this will pass once the dressing is off!

Progress is definitely the “squiggle” that Bonesmart puts on its chart. 2 weeks today since the op and after 3 great days of gentle walking, relaxing in the garden, texting friends at all hours and taking care of myself I had a very bad night last night.. ! It surprised me. I think it was a numb bit on the front of my thigh waking up and saying “hello world”!

I walked around at 3am and took some morphine . It got a bit worse but I kept telling myself the pain relief would kick in. I was moaning and sometimes yelling and hubby slept through it all upstairs!

So not much sleep but that is the way it is. Mostly I get 7 hours ish in two stages. Last night 4!

I binge watched Mad Men on my last rodeo so am thinking “Yellowstone Park”? As many people have recommended it to me. Definitely up for suggestions.,

It is 6:55 here and the birds are starting to sing. Yup, I had a rough night but a new day today.

Remember to ice ice baby. It really helps.

I note you drive a coupe. I drive an mx5 (miata) and bought a new one after a happy 15 years with the old one. Hoping to still be able to drive it now being a double hippy!

You have a fellow hippie across the pond and we both have a lot to look forward to.

Good luck with it all and I hope things improve for you very soon . Xx

Hi @SurreyGirl, my fellow hippie across the pond! We both have very similar stories. I followed you Hotel for Hippies stories with great interest! And a bit of envy. You are a great story teller! Wishing you the best recovery with this and hoping both us are out doing whatever we want to do very soon!

Thanks. It has really helped reading through my own blog if 5 years ago as it had sone useful reminders re how to recover.

I’ll get up to date tommoro re these posts.

I am making slow and steady progress. And I mean SLOW! I am using just the cane now and getting around so much better than 1 week ago. I am now lightly carrying the cane and just using it mainly as a stabilizer instead of leaning on it for that step. Dropping the walker for the cane has made moving around a lot easier for me. My main bathroom is very small with 2 doors on each side of a toilet and shower and the walker was so very difficult to maneuver through all the obstacles. Glad to put that thing back in the garage.

I think my rough start to this recovery has me about 10 days behind my 1st hip recovery. I went back to work the 1st time after 3 weeks. I'm a software developer currently working from home so it seemed so easy then. Wednesday will be the 3 week mark. I tried to sit in my desk chair yesterday to just do a little internet reading and there is no way I will be able to do that yet. So I told my coworkers it will probably be a couple more weeks if everything continues on the good path. They are shocked that I am not Wonder Woman and I was just very lucky last time. Haha

But I am getting stronger and better ROM daily. I am sleeping better at night and for longer stretches. With fewer naps during the day. And I have absolutely no grinding bone pain when I walk now!

Forecast is calling for somewhat cooler temps this next week, with highs bellow 100 degrees for the 1st in August! Mid to upper 90s this next week so I am hopeful I can walk around outside for a bit and get a little sun. I am looking forward to another week of good healing and small steps forward.

Great update! Thank you for sharing your progress. Losing those assistive devices one by one is a great feeling. Thankfully you’re able to take more time off work as returning after only three weeks is rather ambitious. I’m sure with the extra time and rest you’ll be back before you know it.

The ninety’s for temps still sounds pretty hot to me, even though we just dealt with them for a string of days. You poor Texans have been sweltering down there. Hopefully more tolerable weather will stick around for awhile.
Best Wishes!

Today is 4 weeks since surgery. I have been making great progress the past 2 weeks!

I'm now walking without any devices and have no limp! Spent the day Sunday at my youngest son's birthday party and all the family were amazed at my progress. I started out slow for the 1st couple of weeks but the past week I have really seen improvement

I've notified my OS about getting a work release to return to work on the 11th. That will be just over 1 month. Last surgery I was back to work in 3 weeks but I wasn't as far along as I am now today so I know I will be fine next week.

I am amazed at how quickly I progressed over this passed week. Gradually increased my step count to 4500 steps and no pain. Still too hot to really walk much outdoors, unless I get out early and that hasn't really been happening. Haha so I am doing all walking indoors.

My flowerbeds need weeding but I am ignoring them for now. I think in 2 or 3 weeks I will be able to get those back in shape.

I did manage to vacuum floors the other day. I have an Australian Shepherd that sheds like crazy and my floors were furry!

Today I am going to put fresh sheets on my bed, laundry and some dusting. In that order. If I get tired I will stop and save the remainder for later. So I'm already thinking the dusting will be another day. My least favorite house cleaning task is dusting. Hate, hate, hate it. Lol

Thank heavens the long hot summer has finally taken a break and temps are starting to feel like fall is in the air!

Last Tues I had my 6 month follow-up on my right hip and the PA said Xrays show everything is good. Next appointment is in 6 months and the PA said that would be my last follow-up (unless I have issues of course).

Yesterday I had my 6 week follow-up on my left hip and I saw my surgeon. Xrays show everything is in the proper place. My gait is really good and I have no sign of a limp. OS is very pleased and so am I. All restrictions have been removed. Around my incision there's some glue that is a few centimeters away from the actual incision that needs to be cleaned up some but I have been afraid to touch anything in that area. OS said I could work on scrapping that glue off now. Still not sure how to go about that.

I am walking a LOT now! Mostly keeping to 5-6k steps a day but I did get 10,700 steps on Monday and I had NO PAIN! Tues morning when I woke I had a little stiffness in both hips but after getting up everything was fine.

I came home last night to my refrigerator making all kinds of noise! Thought it was coming from the ice maker but after disconnecting that realized it is the compressor. Not sure if it is worth trying to repair but I need to figure out something because it is LOUD! lol

Hi there!

You are making great progress.

I have sone swelling around the scar but little pain and am just working on walking and gait. I am confident I will be able to walk without a limp. Still using one crutch for stability but am practising walking around the garden without one.

Fatigue still a huge issue though and hits unexpectedly. Weather horrible today so doing physio at home and resting..

Glad your recovery is going so well..

This is great! Walking is the best exercises for recovering from a hip replacement. Just be careful not to end up on the ODIC (OverDid It Club) bench!

Sounds like you are doing very well.

Thank you @SurreyGirl! I hear you about the fatigue hitting unexpectedly. I notice sometimes I am Just suddenly so, so tired and just need a rest! Walking around the garden with a crutch is hard work! Be safe and keep on keeping on.

Thank you Deb! I did join the ODIC bench with my 1st hip replacement several times. That was before I found you people (now my people :) ).

I am hoping to go to the state fair in 2 or 3 weeks and I want to be able to get back to the car after all the walking around. haha Last year, with 2 bad hips, my friend had to go get the car and pick me up at the gate.

Hi! I am a 3 week tomorrow newbie! I also have glue on my skin not near the incision. If you figure out how to remove it please share your findings. I tried alcohol pads with no luck. You have the state fair to look forward to!

That is wonderful news that you are no longer limping, I am so pleased for you. I hated my limp and how it made me feel about myself, it was like I suddenly became this old person over night. I guess it's too early for me to know if I'm still limping (I'm 3 weeks post op) and as I'm still not walking crutch free it's hard for me to tell at the moment but I'm seeing a physio tomorrow so maybe they might be able to give me an idea of how my gait is. Finger's crossed it's improved !

Keep up the good work, you are doing so well !

I’ve been watching MadMen as I had not seen that before. As for comedy I pulled up some old 60/70s TV. Beverley Hillbillies and Green Acres. And I Love Lucy makes my day any time.
Also found new British series called “Am I Beibg Unreasonable” so funny!! Cutest special-needs little boy
Oh I loved Am I Being Unreasonable, it was sooo twisty and turny! Just finished watching FISK which I loved and reruns of Vic Reeves Big Night Out, Smell of Reeves and Mortimer and Gone Fishing. Colin from Accounts was fairly good.
