Time to recover.

Some people will try anything to get out of surgery, lol @RinTinTin

I don't want to miss the surgery @Layla... I would have it this very moment if it was up to me :)
I left the urine sample at the lab. My GP thinks it's from additional stress (he knows me for the last 25 years) as I have no other symptoms with the exception of frequent peeing.
He said that even if I do have UTI, being on antibiotics for 48 hours prior to the surgery will be enough to keep my appointment in the operating room.
Maybe I caused the frequent bathroom visits by drinking a lot of ginger tea trying to fight the cold.
Even after 61 years my own body is still a huge enigma.
Thanks for your prayers :)

Good Afternoon,
I hope you know I was only kidding. Trying to add a little levity to a anxious situation.

I do understand you're ready, willing and looking forward to surgery and especially beyond.
I'm sure it was the Ginger tea causing the extra trips to the bathroom. Not only is the added hydration going to cause the need to urinate more often, but Ginger is a natural diuretic. Hopefully the urine specimen shows no signs of infection and you can concentrate on getting over the cold alone.

Get lots of rest, stay hydrated, consider Zinc, and Vitamin C, eat Garlic (if you like it) make some Chicken Noodle Soup and hope for the best. It's all you can do. We're all rooting for you!
@RinTinTin

I know you were kidding @Layla...
What would this life be without a bit of humour? :)

On the day I saw the anesthesiologist, I also saw a hospital pharmacist who suggested to stop with any other medication including the herbal supplements one week prior to the surgery.
Not sure if vitamins (Zinc and C) fit in those two categories.

so confused :)

Oh gosh @RinTinTin I was hoping you would call and ask them.
You still have time to do that and then you'll know.
But you can add garlic to your food, eat oranges and slurp down some soup !
You're going to be all right. Try to rest and treat yourself kindly. ((Hugs))

@RinTinTin It’s uncanny the way our bodies go into mini-revotl just before surgery! I had a pesky issue last weekend, too , before my surgery on Tuesday, but was able to speak to an on-call nurse and on-call doctor who gave me direction and calmed my worries. Like you , the pre-op nurse call asked me to stop all supplements two week before surgery, so I would not have felt free to add Vitamin C without their blessing. Interestingly, they also told me to cut garlic and ginger, because they have anticoagulant properties.

One other thing I was told to do - and wish I had started sooner - is hydrate, 64 ounces minimum, and as much as 80. I think it had a positive influence on my surgery.

As for the Hibiclens and the mucipricin, different surgeons appear to give different directions for their use. Sometimes those directions vary depending on the outcome of a MRSA/Staph screening. So again, it sounds like you’ll need either your doctor’s advice or the hospital’s advice to get this sorted.

My primary care doctor is the one who ordered a UTI culture to rule out a UTI infection prior to surgery, so that may be another avenue you can try to get clarity about your current status prior to the 10th. I would prioritize this, if you decide to seek a culture, as my results took a couple days to come back.

My last-minute “hitches in the get along” were frustrating and worrisome, so I sympathize. What worked best for me to resolve them was proactive communication with both my surgeon and my PCP, I wish you all the best, sorting this out, and feel confident that a short delay would be in your best interest, if your doctor decides it is warranted.

This seems a very common protocol.
Supplements dont have the added scrutiny that other FDA managed substances have, so additives and amounts often aren't verified.
Many times they are mega doses...more isn't always better so I'd rather eat well as Crickethip suggests.

Dietary nutrients are the safe way to go. Vitamin C rich foods and drinks are great ways to boost your immune system.
Everything in moderation...its doubtful foods with garlic or ginger eaten would present problems.
I probably wouldn't eat spicy foods the night before, of course, but a daily regimen of orange juice was on my list of healthy habits before my surgery.
Not much longer @RinTinTin
Then, bye bye hip pain.

@Ptarmigan
If I'm understanding, you had to call, yourself, to find out your surgeon recommends you stop all supplements before surgery? Interesting. You'd assume they would have taken the initiative to inform you sooner than the weekend before your Tuesday surgery, and only then, because YOU called them. Especially given they recommend you stop all supplements TWO WEEKS prior to surgery. You must have been disappointed. My surgeon recommends stopping natural supplements seven days before surgery, unlike your surgeon's recommendation of two weeks. Who's right, who's wrong, who knows? I guess because we're all adults common sense tells us to check with our physician about anything we're unsure of.

Not all doctors recommend you stop Vitamin C before surgery and I most certainly was never cautioned not to add fresh garlic to my food if I chose to do so. Nor to stop eating foods containing Vitamin C. It sounds like RinTinTin made a decision on his own to drink GingerTea in an effort to combat his cold.

As far as MUPIROCIN, it can be recommended you swab nostrils for several days leading up to surgery, without prior MRSA screening. I know this because my surgeon is one who routinely prescribes it and I was never tested for MRSA.

Hope you're feeling better @RinTinTin and all stays on schedule for you. Fingers crossed :fingersx:

Sorry for the confusion @Layla and @Mojo333 ! I see I will have to be more careful when I post as long as I am still on post-op meds and very drowsy.

The surgical nurse from the hospital called to review my med list 12 days prior to surgery. She gave me the information to discontinue supplements - and was very much in sync with Mojo’s thought about the reliability of supplement ingredients. She was talking about the supplement version of garlic and ginger. But I would not have added anything to my med list without consulting her first - in part because that step was also part of my pre-op instructions. When I got my post-op med list, I found out why. It was very detailed, and incorporated all the supplements I had been taking together with the new meds that were prescribed, reviewed for interactions and organized into a spiffy, easy to follow chart.

The surgeon’s office did double check with me 1 week prior to surgery that I had received the call and was following the instructions about medications and supplements - so there was no reason to feel any disappointment whatsoever.

I had to consult the on-call nurse and doctor for a separate issue the weekend prior to surgery - which was a possible infection that might have caused a delay. But it turned out that there was no infection and so no need for concern. I also had to have a UTI ruled out earlier this summer at my first preop physical, and it was my PCP who ordered that test.

As for the Mupirocin, it’s only given at Kaiser after a positive nasal swab for MRSA or staph (which is why I said “sometimes related to” above). And I have already seen two very different sets of instructions for the Hibiclens wash. So, I agree that protocols vary, and asking for your surgeon’s specific ones are the best way to go.

Protocol varies on everything from surgeon to surgeon. Restrictions, blood clot prevention, TEDS, inflatable DVT cuffs, antibiotics for dental visits, staples or dissolvable stitches, when to shower, nasal swabbing, when to drive, schedule PT, or not, number of Hibiclens showers, clean sheets for how many nights pre-op etc The list goes on. As the Staff Disclaimer reflects, our comments are for informational purposes and not a substitute for advice from your PCP or surgeon. We can only assume most understand that and advocate for themselves.

My wife, who works as an admin in the same hospital I will have the surgery, talked to the anesthesiologist who said it's okay to add Vitamin C and Zinc if I feel I may get the cold but stay away from the multivitamin formulas.
My GP didn't call me back about the urinary test results which is a good sign and I stoped my frequent washroom breaks... so I assume it was all from a lot of ginger tea I had that day.
I do feel like I am loosing my voice and need to clear my throat. I am eating well, staying hydrated, trying to keep positive and hope my surgery won't need to be postponed because of that.
That's all I can do.... I think :)

All should be well.:thumb:
You will get your shiny new hip and be on your way to healthy and happy.
Try not to stress (yes, I know...easy for me to say)
We will be rooting for you :yahoo:@RinTinTin

Thank you @Mojo333.
Yes, it is stressful. I need that new hip as the pain is really bed in the right one and the left one makes constant noises (you can hear me from distance approaching).
I forgot to sleep...
Then I realized I can't stop what is meant to be. I can just hope... and stay positive.

You've got things under control. Rest, hydrate, sip juice. it's stressful, for sure. Good news about Vit. C and zinc. I think that will help, at least it does for me when I feel on the edge of something.

Hi @RinTinTin
Great news about the Zinc and Vitamin C. You can use all the help you can get.
Will continue to wish, hope, think good thoughts and send up a prayer that there's no delay.
Keep us posted and enjoy the weekend!

Hi there,I believe no news is good news as far as potential UTI concerned & good news too on the vits front - for what its worth, I’ve had a sore throat/dry mouth off & on for the last week, together with nausea & frequent bathroom visits ..... this is how my body reacts to anxiety and is normal for me ......when I’m distracted, socialising etc I feel much better. I can see from your posts your arthritis is far more disabling than mine & maybe you’re not able to get out much ( and I only have the one dodgy hip to deal with ),so possibly you have more time to dwell on the very slim chance that your surgery will be delayed, causing more worry & further negative physical symptoms ?

I wish you a comfortable weekend & hope you can get some decent sleep - please keep us posted - Hugs

I don't feel better... I developed some dry bothering cough...
I am so upset :(

Oh so sorry you’re not feeling any better at the moment, hopefully you will improve in the next two days.....if you’re temperature is not raised you may find that all will be ok for the day - I do hope so.....we’re all rooting for you - wishing you the very best xx

Good luck on Tuesday! It's not long now! How about some nice teas to help your throat and nose symptoms? Are you in the USA? Celestial Seasonings was my go to when I was feeling under the weather. Throat Coat and Gypsy Cold Care were my faves. Wish I could get them here in UK. Fingers crossed!!!
