Time to recover.

You know after you get past the first couple weeks, you're feeling hopeful and so excited to be pain free that you take it as it comes. Let's compare it to gaining and losing weight, you feel unhappy the entire time you're slowly putting any on, but great while slowly taking it off. Same with your hip, you feel miserable as it slowly deteriorates, but happy, relieved and optimistic, for the most part, as you're continually healing and gaining strength.
@RinTinTin

Well it's a great goal but unfortunately no one can predict. It all depends on how you react to the procedure and how long you have limped around pre-op.

You will certainly be enjoying some nice walks in the sun by that time frame.

Good point Jaycey... I wish I react to the procedure just fine.
I think I already mentioned, I had so many warning signs in the past but doing heavy lifting in the crossfit classes, I always thought my aches and pains in the gluteus areas were signs of overdoing. Considering my age, I though I'll just need a bit longer to recover. The problem was... I continued to go to the gym daily and never gave my body a chance.
Even my family doc who knows me an my sport history for few decades was under impression it's from overuse.
I really started to be concerned about my limping last year when I decided to visit a sport medicine specialist.
The x-rays showed severe OA in both hips. I was shocked... what was I doing to my body all these years?
Anyway... it is what it is and I am looking forward to activate alarms at the airports in the near future! :)

I was in the gym everyday until my hip finally collapsed! So yes, I too had plenty of warnings. In my case it's all passed down through my family.

You will be so happy when both hips are done and dusted!

I don't know about hips but after knee I was in the gym at three months building strength and bike riding 15 miles a day...

You did extraordinary mainegirl! I was just texting with a friend of mine yesterday who is your age and had knee replacement in March. He told me he is still having a lot of stiffness in the knee and just recently started to walk without cane.

Love your analogy Layla!

Talking about bike riding... I know it may be individual... but what is the reasonable timeline after the hip surgery to sit on a stationary bike and try to turn the pedals?
Anyone has done that... when?
Oops... that may be a question for post-op forum :)

Best answer might come from your surgeon . You may or may not have restrictions in early weeks. My OS says NO PT for the first six weeks but walking as much as I can. I kinda lumped cycling under PT..

sounds like pretty reasonable advice.
How do you feel 10 days prior your THR?

@RinTinTin

I know it needs doing.. There are periods of awful pain when I forget my "cocktail" of Aleve and Tylenol which otherwise does the job. I am able to haul stuff around and run around doing errands and gardening. I have several things planned out so I am not so apt to give myself pre op heebie jeebies.. Going to a Star Party, going out to dinner, going out to outdoor movies ( The Maine Outdoors Film Festival held on a hilltop with sweeping views of the White Mountains)

I can't wait to get this thing done.. I have a pop surgeon ( as in popular though he is a hunk too) and he is so booked I had to wait 3.5 months

Since I don't limp usually I have hope for a rapid recovery. Plus I have three friends nearby who are also hippies.. One is busy digging a ditch for drainage now.. One is at the dock swimming and the other recent one is back to three mile walks a day ( she was a last Nov THR)

I know your pain... I don't sleep... turning in bed is incredibly painful.
Still, it's so comforting to hear about the successful recovery of your hippies friends...

Another problem and concern - bad toothache... and my dentist is on vacations!
I read here the THR surgery will be postponed because of tooth extraction.
Does this apply to any other procedure?
How long before the surgery we are not supposed to have any?
What about after the THR?
Anyone went through that?

Oh no. I hope this wont cause a delay.
Can you get in with another dentist?
Significant conditions need to be resolved before surgery. A dental procedure may allow bacteria to enter your bloodstream and cause an infection that could travel to your artificial joint. ...if you need dental work within two weeks of your scheduled surgery let your OS know right away.

I still have a month to go...
and still not sure what to do...
Maybe I should wait till Monday and call the office of my OS to find out his preferences, hoping the toothache won't get unbearable.

I would call a dentist Hopefully there is an emergency dental clinic available. Call Today. And explain your circumstances. Don't play with fire.. Ignoring it won't help and denying it or hiding from your OS could hurt your new hip and you.

Thank you mainegirl1!
There are few dental offices in my neighbourhood that are opened today but I am simply afraid they won't take me seriously or will ignore my circumstances.
My tooth is not as sensitive as last night and I may as well wait till Monday and contact my OS office.
I think his opinion is the most important at this moment.
If he says I am okay to have it fixed I'll do it next week as my dentist is also back from vacation.
I just hope the pain does not get worse.

Morning @RinTinTin. It is suggested to get any dental work done including cleaning before surgery for the reasons of infection as mentioned already. Let your regular dentist know, if you haven't that you are having THR. My surgeon and dentist have prodacal of one antibiotic for any dental work including cleaning for first year post op. If this tooth is giving you "any" discomfort or pain I highly recommend getting in to take care of it. You've got time to take care of it before surgery. Do let your dentist know what's coming up as it's important for your future health with the new hip. Good luck!

I appreciatie your advice julesglass. I just called my dentist office and they are going to squeeze me in on Monday at 10am. I have exactly one month to me THR... is that enough time to recover and eliminate the risk of infection? (even if i need to have it extracted?)

I believe that is plenty time for it. Your dentist will be vilagent to insure your planned surgery will not be interrupted. We all feel close here on this forum, like family. I have been know to wag my finger at those I care about. So here's to you.... Happy days are headed your way!!!! :walking:

I can't really remember how I found this forum but God... I am so thankful.
I can't imagine awaiting the surgery without the wonderful people here who share their experiences and knowledge to makes us all feel better.
Priceless!
